I have a 1969 C60 that I have been very slowly been working on and gathering parts for when I get time. I just replaced the 20" rims and tires today with new 22.5" Daytons and 295/75s. All was good and great after only breaking one stud until I got to the drivers side steer tire. The tire spun just a little and I figured I would work it back and forth to get it to break free with no luck. I ended up locking it in solid by hand and can't get it to move. I put the tire on and aligned it the best I could based off of rim/hub distance until I can figure out why it's not spinning. It has air brakes obviously and this is my first truck with air brakes. I have only driven this truck about 5 miles in the past year or so. It's been driven maybe 1/4 mile in the last 2 weeks and didn't show any signs of a sticking tire. It has in my opinion always felt under powered for what I expect from a 427 so a sticking brake makes sense. What what be a good starting point for me to check on this hub to see why it isn't spinning? I just assume it has to be the brake sticking, I could be wrong and if I am I need help with a direction to go. Thanks for any help.
Post pictures of the air brake set up on the backing plate...you could have S-cam or Wedge type brakes and knowing that and might help others help you figure it out...
Hy Pvmt-Pndr, those are either S cam or Flat cam brakes not wedge brakes. See if you can move the top of the slack adjuster towards the front of the truck, if there is any movement there then I doubt that your wheel is being held in place by the brakes. Have you ever adjusted air brakes?
Thanks, I'll do that when I get home this evening and report back. I have not adjusted the brakes. I think I have a pretty good idea how to from research on the web, I'll take any helpful hits though.
How does the hub come apart if I need to get into it to do more investigating?
Hy Pvmt-Pndr, the hub removal process is the same as a truck equipped with hydraulic brakes, back off the brake adjustment, remove the hub cap, fold back the bearing nut locking tab, remove the wheel bearing adjusting lock nut and adjusting nut, pull off the outer wheel bearing and remove the hub and drum assembly. Air brakes have return springs just like hydraulic brakes and when they break strange things can happen. Wheel bearings can seize and lock the hub up as well, good luck getting things apart.
It ended up being the slack adjuster was a little too tight. While I already had it apart I went ahead and inspected the pads and repacked the bearings. Thanks for your help. I found a bad tie rod end while I had my daughter in the cab and I was u set the truck adjusting. Is there a go to place for these truck tie rod ends?
Hy Pvmt-Pndr, we will need to know the front axle capacity before we or a parts store can get you the correct tie rod ends. Clean the axle off with a wire brush, you are looking for some casting numbers (raised), most of them that I have found have been near the center of the beam, good luck with the search
I found them. They're not clear enough to read. I'll post a picture and maybe someone will be able to narrow it down. I've also posted every other thing I can to try to figure it out. It looks like my springs are 9k pound springs
Hy Pvmt-Pndr, okay your truck has a 9000 lb. front axle, the o.e.m. p/ns are right 2330712 left 2330713 I did cross the numbers at Napa's website but I got three possible numbers. So My advice is take the failed part with you to Napa with the part numbers I have given you and see if they can figure out the correct one to bring in for you. Hope that helps.
