Good evening fellow stovebolters. I have a question regarding the hood on my 1950 3800. The rear hood brace isn't attached to the hood anywhere except the center and very outer edge. Please see attached photo. Looking from the back and under side, there is a gap between the hood piece and the brace. Is this normal? Should it be spot welded to the brace? Thanks in advance... Clint.

I believe what you're seeing is normal. The rear brace is adjustable in the center to change the height of the hood in the center in relation to the cowl. If it were spot welded to the brace that wouldn't be possible.

A felt piece goes in to some of that gap. I used sound deadener for mine.

I leave mine without anything in there even though there was something there originally. The original material had a tar-like substance in it which shrinks, creating a space allowing the hood to move up and down, resulting in creating damage to the hood from constant hammering into the shrunken material.
If this material is left out, and you have the hood adjusted properly with the rear of the hood down tight against the hood seal, no contact will occur.

I don't know where bulk felt material is available, but I've used felt winter boot insoles for similar uses. It's about 3/8-1/2" thick.
Actually just found various felt materials at McMaster Carr

Don't know about the felt. I used the same stuff I've been using all over my Suburban for sound deadening. https://www.hillas.com/Categories/P...s-08840-500-mm-x-500-mm-10-per-case.html

I haven't checked what's in my hood, but you may be right to avoid felt. It would tend to retain moisture and promote rust, unless it was impregnated with oil or tar. My hood isn't really very accessible right now, but I can try and check.
In my cab at the center top between inner and outer rear panels was a piece of rubber foam material, serving essentially the same purpose of reducing vibration.
Your link doesn't say how thick that sound deadening material is.

I checked my hood this afternoon. Nothing in between the brace and the hood itself.
