I am in the process of restoring a 1950 1/2ton with a 1954 235 in it. I do not have an exhaust system to use as a pattern for a muffler shop to fabricate a new system. My question is whether there is a difference between the exhaust manifold outlet of the 216 vs the 235 and whether there may also be differences between the '50 vs '54 chassis that would effect the exhaust system. Chevs of the Forties has complete systems for both but I don't know which year system will fit. Any help would be appreciated.

It would probably be cheaper to simply buy the muffler that you want, and take it to a shop that can mandrel-bend exhaust pipe (keeps the same inside diameter when making a bend).
Jim Carter truck parts has factory style mufflers if that is what you want, or you can use an off-the-shelf brand if you want a whisper-quiet motor.
I have a factory style muffler from JC on my truck and tailpipe that dumps out under the rear bumper in the stock location. It's not the quietest, but sounds great in my opinion.

If your "muffler shop" can't figure out how to bend pipes to fit that truck, you need to RUN- - - -not walk away from there! That's about as simple a routing as there can be!

The problem is getting the truck to the muffler shop. I don't want to drive there without any exhaust at all and I don't want to pay to have it towed. I know they can bend the pipe but I would rather buy the complete system and install it myself. I just don't know year's system will fit.

What's wrong with driving it? Get a set of earmuffs and press on, if it's too loud! Maybe rig up a short piece of pipe from the manifold toward the ground to direct the heat out of the engine compartment. I'd use a chunk of water pipe and some wire- - - -stick the pipe up inside the exhaust manifold and tie it to the intake- - - -like maybe with a metal clothes hanger.

Huck,
Borrow a trailer? Call a Friend (Favor)
You have AAA, free tow? Or like Jerry said put a straight pipe on and get it there.
A "Good" exhaust shop will not only make it for you (usually cheaper) you keep a local Business going! They will also put two or three (in my case) different mufflers on so YOU can hear what it will sound like before it is finished....Wild, mild, quiet.
I just did this in April with my 1950 3100 w/235 Dual exhaust manifold.
I went with dual into Single. Sounds great Runs Great.
Good luck.
