Your truck most likely has an Eaton HO52,HO72 rear axle. Check to see what gear ratio you have, but 4.56 is the fastest As I recall. Look in the 1 ton forum, pinned at the top is A LOT of information about axle swaps for better gears. Most of this info is applicable to 3/4 and 1 tons.

'37 GMC T-18 w/ DD 4-53T, RTO-610, 6231 aux., '95 GMC running gear, full disc brakes, power steering, 22.5 wheels and tires.
'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

If so, the upgrade to better highway speeds is one of the easiest projects there is for these trucks. Read this Tech Tip Article The info in it applies to the 3600 trucks as well as the 3800 series.
