on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Dec 2019 Posts: 22 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2019 Posts: 22 | I have a 39Chevrolet master deluxe. It had a 235 engine 3 speed top mount transmission. The 235 has a crack in the block. So I pulled the engine and transmission. And am installing a straight six 292 engine. My previous transmission will not bolt to the bell housing. So with the engine 292 what transmission can I use? Will I have to change the drive line and rear end to make it work? This hasn't gone well the wife is not like the cost of things. I thought I saw some were a S10 4 or 5 speed would work? Can you give me what derecktion to go in? I am mechanicaly inclined.PLEASE HELP. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 | With a 292 any transmission from a 63 or newer 4cyl, 6cyl, and small and big block V8 will bolt up. The exception is the auto transmissions or standard bell housing from the 60 degree V6. The S10 trans will work as will other T5 overdrive trans but you will need to check shifter location if you are still using the 39 bench seat. This is not a project that will make a dollar watching wife happy.

Simple oversight can create something which is not nice to drive. As Evan said, nothing about this will be cheap and you must know where the shifter will be located. A 4 speed will cost as much as a T5, plus you will not get the advantage of an overdrive gear and you also must have an open driveshaft. In fact, with the 292, I can not think of any transmission which will not require you to change to an open driveshaft. You must also consider the cost to change to your emergency brake system, your regular braking system, spring mounts, pinion angle, shock absorber mounts, you may have to have a driveshaft custom made for you, etc. And your original mechanical speedometer may not work correctly with a different transmission.
Good luck. Personally I would say the least expensive option would be to replace the 235 with another 235.
