Hello, I have a 1952 2 ton truck with 3 broken brake springs on one side. I haven't had any luck finding replacements online. Does anyone know if the Raybestos H9226 or Napa part #80166 will work? And is there risk of damage to the cylinders if the spring is oversized? Also, can these be installed with a long screwdriver or similar instead of the special too? Below is from the '54 manual, but is the same set up I have. Thanks for any info or advice. -Scott
Hy GarlandFarms, I believe the o.e.m. p/ns for the pull back springs are: short spring p/n 3694316, long spring p/n 3694799. Neither of those p/ns crossed at the Napa website. Napa now uses the old United brake part numbers for their numbers by adding "UP" to the front of the United part number, I tried United p/n 80166 at the Napa site and turned up nothing. United p/n 80166 is the correct part number for the spring set for your truck four of each spring are required. I tried crossing Raybestos H9226 at both Napa and RockAuto and turned up nothing. It seems this particular spring set is not being reproduced either because of the age of the truck or the short span of their use. There is a member here 54 3600 I believe it is, if he sees this he will probably check for the old O.E.M. part numbers at dealerships. Good luck in your search.
Recently someone was looking for some NAPA parts by the correct part number with no luck on the website. I called my local NAPA and given the same part number they are readily available. Worth calling to double check availability in person.
Dang. Well thanks everyone for the detailed info. I guess my next question is, does anyone know the year range they used these springs? I have a rolling 1950 Chevy 5700 parts chassis and pulled a rear hub thinking I could use those, but the springs were different. I know of a couple old truck salvage yards along the Front Range in my area and want to make sure I find the correct year model before I start working remotely to retrieve the springs from a salvaged truck. I figured all 2 ton rear brakes were all the same in the Advance Design era, but unfortunately this isn't the case. Thanks again. -Scott
Hy guys, Grigg, I'm in Canada and the two Napa websites U.S. and Canada don't give the same info, so I always search the U.S. site, now you're telling me that info may not be complete, just marvelous! 54 3600 thank you very much for your searching efforts. GarlandFarms, using the info from Grigg please call Napa and double check the availability of their part number UP80166, please keep us informed as to how your search goes.
I made a coil spring installation tool by grinding a groove very near the end of an appropriately sized steel rod that got gradually deeper as I went around the rod. Used a cutoff wheel to do the grinding. Worked well.

Thanks Ed. I will try to make the tool too. And thanks everyone for the great info. I'm heading to a large Napa in the industrial end of town later this afternoon, I'll let you know what I learn. Wish me luck. -Scott
I have a 1953 Chevrolet 6400 series with same broken springs. I've replaced wheel cylinders, master cylinder and then have been sitting 8 months with drums off . I've been searching with all the same part numbers, ebay, tractor stores and old truck shops, but have been stifled..
I would be interested in anybody with used springs and pay you for your time , tear down, shipping etc.. I'd love to be kept in the loop if anybody figures out the magic replacement part number. We have found larger springs and smaller springs, but not correct springs.
Hy Guys, Raybestos part number H500 contains eight springs which are 1/16" longer than the listed length of the longer spring in the set you all seek. I suggest you could use those springs in all positions and redrill you shoes making the hook end 5/16" father away than it is now from the anchor pin for the short spring. These springs are truck springs from a slightly newer application, I checked RockAuto's website but no joy there however crossing the Raybestos number at Napa's website yielded their part number UP80164 $19.99 USD online price, hope that helps.
Thanks for the help everybody.. I luckily found one place left that claims to have Raybestos H500. I'll give this a try, then if it doesn't work, I'll try Eaton Detroit Springs and ESPO Springs & Things.
I'm also sorry that I stole a thread.. I thought this thread was about others with same struggle to find springs. It's been 9 months of dead ends.
Hy mttow and guys, I found some other crosses to Raybestos H500, Chrysler 1778387, Ford B7Q2296A,TDAA2296A, Mopar brand HX500, I hope one of those leads to some springs. I'll see if I can find a GM part number.
These are the springs! A friend of mine thinks they may be able to be produced in a small run if there is enough demand.
Your springs fit ALL Utility from 1951-57...
Short springs are 3-7/16" O.L. painted Green, p/n 3694516, (4) required.
Long springs are 3-7/8" O.L. painted Black, p/n 3694799, (4) required.
This might help is finding additional interest in having them made...
Did your friend give you any idea as to what quantity a small run is and what the cost would be? I had TF Cab SS trim spring clips made and the cost for the 46 I needed was the same as having 4000 made (set up time and a 1-hour run), so I bit the bullet and got 4000 clips!
So one of the pics in this post caught my attention and I thought, “hey, that pic looks familiar.” It’s the one with the single black spring and the tape measure, I took back in 2013. Here’s some more eye candy...now all I have to do is see if I can find them.
How many are needed? Of just the black? Let me know and I can see if I can find this weekend...
He just got back to me. He had 15 sets made, 6 springs each and it was $2000 so yes expensive. And they were smaller springs, not sure if that matters.
Those green ones pictured look like the ones I have but mine are a darker green. I checked my inventory list I made and they are 3694516. I also have 4 of each side for the brake shoe adjusting screws. Must have been a common part to replace back then?
