Can anyone tell me if there is a left and right or front and back to the hood springs? I removed them - and noted how they came off. I put them back the way I thought they came off... but one just won't go back the the previous adjustment tightening. One went on fine... the other has been a.... challenge...

Yep... except the hinges have an adjustment slot. The hole closest to the grill has no adjustment... the hole closest to the firewall is slotted.. I can see where in the rear hole in the hinge where the bolt washer was previously seated. Now, when I place the rear bolt in the hinge at that location, and put the front bolt in, the spring scrapes the fender..

Ok - I reversed the spring so that it looks the same as the other side - that is at the fender bracket where the front of the spring attaches, on the passenger side - the spring goes into the fender bracket slot from the outside. On the drier's side, the front of the spring goes into the fender bracket slot from the inside of the bracket. Clearance at the fender is really close, but it doesn't scrape - which is what I want. I got the adjustment slot to line up by disconnecting the spring and loosely putting the bolt closest to the firewall in first at the previous location of alignment. Then I operated the spring until the front hole in the bracket lined up lined up with the hinge bracket hole and loosely put that bolt in. I operated the spring so that I could attach the spring to the lower portion of the hinge - and tightened the hinge down.

My question was about the hinges... is there a front or back - left or right.

Can you post a picture of you hinge/spring assembly at it's current state? I would imagine that you could decipher what side is what, or if it's the same by comparing them side by side. It may help give you an idea of how the hinges were originally mounted. I know I had some trouble with that while trying to get my hood to sit flat and level on my 62'. out in this desert the temp changes so fast it makes my hood slightly change shape throughout the day and pop up in the back by about 1cm. hope you get this all hammered out

Terrance and Mary

First thank you for the KINDNESS in your messages. I appreciate your SPIRIT OF HELPFULNESS — and sense of CALM in thinking about my issue. I did examine the hinges side by side after I took them off and they appeared to be the same length — although the loop ends where they attach to the hinge and the body appear to be slightly different. One loop end appears to be ¼ inch longer than the other — which caused my original question which was: “Can anyone tell me if there is a left and right or front and back to the hood springs?” I anticipated I would get an answer like: “Just looked at my 62' there is no way to mix those up as far as I can tell.”

You made a friend today — and so did I.

Well It's odd that the springs would have any difference to them. On my truck they are identical and as far as i know my springs are original to the truck. (judging by how loose they are now.)
Seeing as one is longer, If you have some time to waste i would swap them around and see what happens. I'm pretty sure you can put that stuff on bass akwards and as long as you are slow and careful while closing the hood the first time you shouldn't damage or bend anything. Once you eliminate all the wrong ways you will only be left with the right one. So i would swap the springs around for a little and if there is no "right way" to do it then those springs may not be the same as the factory set. any pics or link to he springs you bought would help out. until then good luck

Hi,
I've owned a couple of these 60-66 c10's. I can tell you that there is indeed a left and a right. I know this is true for original style springs only. I'm not sure about aftermarket, but i can only guess that it's true for them too. If you clean, sand or blast the top of the hinge brackets (the flat piece that bolts to the hood) somewhere on those pieces you should see an L or an R stamped into them. Once you can identify them, this should solve your issue. Also, never, never do anything more than clean or wire wheel the springs, you'll weaken them otherwise. Anyone taking apart anything, remember to label the parts as they come off!! I know, this might not have been the case here, but good practice.

Good luck.
