Hi, I installed a Pertronix Ignitor and a flamethrower coil on my 235 do I still need the wire from the foot starter to the coil? Thanks Steve

If you still have the resistor in the circuit, you will need the wire for a bypass.

Try to provide more information in future posts.

1. Presumably you still have a 6v negative ground electrical system in your Chevrolet (?) truck?
Presumably you have a 6v negative ground Pertronix module (what part #)?

If both presumptions are correct, you do not need "the resistor".

What resistor, and, where is the resistor?

2. Possibly you have a 12v conversion negative ground electrical system?
Presumably you have a 12v negative ground Pertronix module (what part #)?

If both presumptions are correct, I think you do not need a resistor in the starting circuit.

I think that Pertronix has diagrams somewhere on their website?
I'll look for them after you clarify what you have - or, you could look for them on Pertronix's website.

If I am incorrect/incomplete, someone will correct/clarify.

This Installation Manual might help - but, I cannot read it.

For George & Steve: what resistor, and, where?

I have seen/read-about "ballast wires" between the ignition switch to the coil;
and, I have seen ballasts resistors in the lead from ignition to the coil;
and, I have seen "ballasted" coils (VW, I think)?

Hi, motor is a 1959 235 12 volt neg ground with the voltage regulator still there on the fire wall. I will look for the part number on the Pertronix today I could not find any info about the wire from the foot starter to the coil on the pertronix site but will do some more digging . Thank you all for the response. I don't have the wire from foot starter to coil hooked up a little slow cranking at first before motor starts.

The resistor on that model is a ceramic unit on the outside of the firewall near the v.reg. & horn relay. Read the directions on the Petronix carefully. Some combinations use a resistor in the circuit & some don't. It is important to get the right setup. The last one I had was a 56 I put Petronix on. I used the resistor. It worked fine, started instantly but I accidently left the key on without the engine running one time when I was testing lights. Over night it blew the coil wide open.

Hi, No resistor on the firewall at all looks like there never was one mounted. Tim it is a 1168LS and a 3.0 flame thrower coil. I will do some more research on this. I am not to good with the electrical stuff but I am learning. I will call the tech department on Monday. Again thanks for the help.

That is a 12v negative ground unit.

No ballast resistor is needed.

With Pertronix, when you use their Flamethrower coil, you do not need a ballast resistor or the wire from side terminal. Positive coil terminal gets Pertronix red and ignition "ON". Two wires.

Ditto. No resistor needed. But do make sure you are using the right coil. Some pentronix ignitions used 3.0 coils, some used 1.5 coils. Besides that easy peasy. And if you leave the key on. Yep coil will fry.

Thanks for all the info It is my Son's truck I will tell him about not to leave the key on without it running. It is almost ready to take to him in Ft Lauderdale I don't think it will happen any time soon with what is going on. Again thanks for the help! Steve

I just put this system in my 59 w/235. No resistor needed as the Pertronix system requires 12 volts. The resistor was used to knock down the voltage after the engine started to 6-8 volts to protect the points and condenser. I had the resistor on the firewall and did a bypass on the backside of it so it gives the appearance of originality. It is a great upgrade to go to the Pertronix system, runs so much smoother!
