Does anyone know if the distributor is suppose to have an O-ring in the slot of the base where it rides in the block? Looks like it should but the shop manual and the parts book don't really show anything. Thanks

No “0” ring. You won’t get the distributor to seat if you put one on the housing.🛠

x2. No o rings. The photo is a nos 2403 distributor. No o rings. I have 10 more distributors here, none with o rings. In the 43 years I have been messing with these motors I have never seen one with an o ring. So if you have one with an o ring, take it off.

In my 51 years owning and working-on many Stovebolt-6 engines I have never seen an o-ring on a distributor.

I bet it is a clever value-added/cost-added "upgrade" done by some caring/thoughtful repair shops/owners?

An o ring Would probably prevent the vac advance from working,

I have only seen O rings on rebuilt distributors.
As Dads50 said, it will keep the vacuum advance from twisting the distributor if installed.
These same distributors are usually missing the wear disc, spring and grease cup.

I have a HEI distributer on my 235. The distributer came with an o ring. I tried it without the o ring and was getting an oil leak. Put the o ring on the distributer and now no oil leak. The distributer has a built in vac advance so the distributer no longer moves. Very pleased with its operation and also opened the gap on my plugs to 50

Everyone of you have answered what I kinda thought would be the answer! I’ve never seen one either but after a fresh rebuild and a freshly rebuilt distributor to drop in I thought I would throw it out there as that upper slot in the shaft sure seems like it was made for one! Thank you all!

The only reason there's a groove in the housing is to prevent oil from working its way up due to splash in the crankcase and leaking down the side of the block. Even if a square-sided ring was fitted there, it would interfere with the movement of the housing in response to the vacuum advance.

Good tip there from Pre ‘68 Dave
The reman distributor I got from napa was missing the spring and disc in the grease cup
They also added that o ring that gave me fits when trying to drop it in (came on this site and was advised to get rid of oring)

If you click on Pre ‘68 Dave blog in his signature he has a write up on adding a disc and spring

...his link...

One good thing about that distributor from is it came with a vac advance. I don't think its included anymore. If you send your back for a core chanrge remember to remove the vac advance.

I wish I had kept the vacuum advance for a spare off of a couple I sent in. Oh well, you live and learn
