I have discovered that the truck has a 1947 bed and rear fenders. This is likely why the existing running boards have been spliced and the front does not match the rear ribs. This sounds like it will need to be fabbed. Since both ends of the running boards bolt to the fenders, and the fenders are different from 46 to 47, (and as you discovered the rib count is different), you'll have the make something work.
If you're going to keep the 47 rear fenders, maybe you can just clean up the splice. If you go with rear 41-46 rear fenders, maybe you can find the rear part of that year boards and splice them in.

'37 GMC T-18 w/ DD 4-53T, RTO-610, 6231 aux., '95 GMC running gear, full disc brakes, power steering, 22.5 wheels and tires.
'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.
