For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 24 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 24 | I just aquired a 63 3/4 ton stepside longgbed... it is VERY plain mechanically. No air No Power Steering Single line from master cylinder
I want to use the hydroboost system from 1 ton truck to upgrade my brakes... I want power steering as well... this truck is going to see heavy trailering duty... not just a show truck. Do I need to use the steering box from the donor 1 ton or diesel... has anyone here done the hydroboost conversion and have suggestions on what to do... not do ....I had a hydroboost on a diesel Chevy I had... never worked on it though... it never gave me a reason to... Will the box on a 1 ton bolt up on my 63??? front end is similar or alike isn't it??
The steering box on the 63 is bad right now and needs replacement.... I had not planned on the hydroost this early in the resto process but if Im going to have to put a steering box on anyway.. well, I might as well start the upgrade now ..
Any help here would be appreaicated..

I am providing two links for you, one is to a company run by a guy named Paul. He is touted as being extremely helpful, you may want to give him a call. http://www.hydratechbraking.com/ Also is a link to a site for Carl Cassanova. He adapted a late model Mustang Cobra hydrobooster to his 68 Camaro. I'm following this route myself on my Camaro and have been thinking about doing it on my AD as well. http://www.geocities.com/casanoc | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | The steering gear will fit with a few modifications. Most specialty suppliers have a kit. You shouldn,t have any problem mounting the hydroboost to the fire with a little engenuity. The pump for that system has an extra return tube on the pump reservoir. The rest is getting the hoses. Great brakes. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 24 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 24 | thanks, both helpful replies. ..i started learning about them after i read a small article about them in Hot Rod... hydraboost was standard brake on 73-87 chevy duallies..they are in the boneyards ...i read an article on how the swap of the steering box at the same time was advisable..perhaps this solved plumbing issues at little to no cost... hydraulic fittings and hoses can be expensive... as are the new hydraboost units... as it has been some time since my initial reading- I could not remember if the brake was fed from the pump or box... Wrenchbender... do you have a brand name or could you be more specific on the suppliers of adapter kits for the steering box... I believe I will go ahead and upgrade to 1 ton box if it will fit... complete system from Chev/C30... no headaches on compatibility | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 24 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 24 | I kind of figured a box swap was possible as the front end apparatus from 60 to 87 is pretty similar | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 . | | .
