Looking at an engine assembly with a LAQ25I84 stamped into the block pad and has 3701887 head casting number. Any idea what this unit is? 235 or 261 or a combination? Thanks!

3701887 is a 12953 truck 235 head.

LAQ25I84
L = 1953
A = car 235 equipped with a Powerglide transmission
Q = Tonawanda, NY engine plant
12953-1000 = 11953rd engine out of that plant in 1953

It would have hydraulic lifters.

261s were introduced in 1954 (and, were only used in trucks).

Dont be fooled by the captains bars on the distributor side, but is a 235 not a 261 as Tim said.
That is a good little engine.

Thanks, sstock

I forgot how those bars in that year can cause confusion.

This was a takeout,and it had a closed driveline truck 4 speed behind it. I noticed that the 4 speed front bearing cover(where the to bearing slides to operate the clutch had 6 perimeter bolts,. I always thought that there were only 4 bolts holding this front retainer on.
