Original coils were oil filled and stayed cooler with the oil towards the top "working end". At least that is what I had always been told.

Please be more specific with details/terminology.
Upside-down - depends on which side you think should be up.
Are you referring to the flat side or the leads side?
My old stovebolts had the flat-side up and the leads-side down.
As shown in all GM manuals/documents.
Flat-side-up would therefore be the right/correct-side-up.

GMC also had the coil with the lead side own. Ed

'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed. '55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

tc, Sorry for the confusion, but glad to clarify. I wanted to know why they are shown in pictures and manuals with the 'flat' side up and the 'lead' side pointing down, toward the road. Mine on my restored '58 235 is installed 'flat' side down (toward the road) and 'lead' side up. John
