Do I have to drain the coolant prior to pulling the temp probe. I assuming yes but I thought I'd ask. I bought a new probe/temp gauge and I was hoping to make a quick swap without draining coolant.
Any feedback is appreciated (even sarcasm lol)
I'm working on a 54 truck with a 62 engine.

Where does the probe/sender enter the block? Near the top of the head?
Does the sender/probe diameter match the hole in the head?
If yes, drain a quart of coolant (save it).
Remove the old probe.
Screw in the new probe.
Pour in the coolant.
Put the radiator cap back on.
Start the engine and check around the probe/sender for leaks.

It is a 235 and the probe is at the rear of the block about half way down. Judging from the appearance the probe looks the same diameter as the current probe so I hoping for a easy out, easy in swap. (Now that jinks myself )

No need to drain all of it. Save what you drained and pour it back in. Quick and easy! Run the engine with the radiator cap off long enough for the thermostat to open to be sure you don't have any trapped air, and top off as necessary.
