Guys this is a repost from over in the Body Forum as need to some help to rebuild the glass on my 49 Suburban. The 49 and earlier AD had the door glass encased with the steel frame around glass. I want keep the one piece window but go to non encased glass if possible. (like in the 51 and later models). Has anyone done this or know of a kit that can be used in the conversion. Could a reputable glass shop cut one from a pattern and I use the 51-54 window channel, etc?

Hmmm....my 59 truck has the windows in a frame. Why do you want to remove the frame? I would think a modern cut piece of glass with a bit more on it would fit your channels, if you had that felt trim in there. I wouldn't like the glass sliding up and down in the old steel channels. The problem is that the frame for the glass is what the regulator bolts on to to raise the window.

Unfortunately I am not familiar enough with modern doors/glass but would you drill holes or just make a bottom frame piece big enough to hold the bottom of the glass to lift and lower it?

If so, then you could probably just pull the frame off and be done with it but there would be some slop. You'd need to have the glass shop cut the piece the same size as your glass with the frame on it.

I am not familiar with the 49 or 51, but my aproach would be to look at the 51 inner workings and determine if it can be transplanted to your 49. If so, I would locate the parts used or repo and go to work. You could always opt for the expensive route and replace the doors. Any good glass shop could cut the glass from a pattern or drawing.

I don't think it will fit inside the later window trim.
