You can remove the Hydra-Matic transmission and straight 6 engine out the front of an 54/55st A-D truck , as “one piece”:
- make sure your lift can handle the total weight
- remove the hood
- remove the grill
- remove the radiator
- remove the radiator housing
- support the engine transmission “as appropriate”, and remove the rear-engine and transmission cross members
- disconnect the driveshaft
- slowly/carefully remove the transmission-engine assembly
- say a prayer, if you believe in the power of prayer

What makes most sense is to remove transmission. Getting at all the bolts is the only challenge. Floor cover removal will help.
The least dangerous, with a heavy hydramatic, is take all out at once.

| | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 | To me the 55-59 front sheet metal clip is even easier to remove in one piece than the AD clip. Mark and save the rear top of the fender to cowl shims and the bottom rear of fender to bracket shims if present. Sometimes there are shims on the two radiator core support mounts. Label them all so the hood to fender gap will stay the same. Once all the bolts are removed have a buddy grab the head light "eye brow" and center of the fender wheel opening while you do the same and it will be balanced. Why fight tight quarters when the clip is SO EASY to remove and lets you walk right up to any component on the engine.
