I just got a rebuilt 235 running today. It is popping though the carb bad like an intake valve is open. I double checked my wires and valve adjustment. Everything seems fine and it in the correct order. It will idle but has no power and is of course missing. I did notice one of the lifters did not seem pumped up. I let all of them soak in oil for like a week before installing them. The engine has a worked head new rings and main and rod bearings. Also it has a new carb and a one wire dist. new plugs and wires.

I know you said you rechecked your valve adjustment but popping through the carb is a sign of too tight valve adjustment. Are you double sure you dont have mechanical lifters and you are setting them like hydraulics? Truck engines have mechanical lifters and cams, or did you put hydraulic lifters on a mechanical cam??

I pulled the lifters out of a 235 that had been rebuilt but the guy put the wrong bearings in the rods. So I used the head and lifters and push rods from that engine to the other one How can you tell what cam it has

Just asking but had the lifters been run on the old motor? Where did you get the cam you used? What year block is your 235? Can you list a photo of the top of your lifters?

And the plot thickens, I think we are getting close to your problem.
A) Never use used lifters from another cam on the new cam and
B) Never assume anything about unknown components.
C) I stick by you have incorrect valve adjustment because of incompatible cam/ lifters. Didnt you rebuild the engine? What cam did you buy or have reground? What kind of lifters did you scavenge from the other engine?

This was just a overhaul on a engine that ran good. Since I was changing the engine I thought it would be good to put new rings and bearings in it. I am going to put the solid lifters that came from it back in it today. I switched to hydraulic.

You got it figured out. As said above “you can’t run hydraulic lifters on a solid cam”. 🛠

Yes zero lash plus a turn with hydraulics on a mechanical cam designed to have clearance ramps will throw a whole bunch of unburned fuel in places it shouldn't be. Now you must pull your push rods and make sure they are not all bent. Lucky rock auto has them dirt cheap if need be. I'm betting they are bent, at least on the intake sides.

When lifters are removed, for whatever reason, they should be kept in the order they came out, everything else for that matter.

Agreed. If you did not keep track of the lifters and where each lifter came from, you may have an issue a little further down the road.

If the lifters were put in the wrong holes, you can be our guinea pig to test how long one of these engines will run just fine with mismatched used lifters on a used camshaft journals.
My early wager is "an appreciable length of time". These are tractor engines designed to be used by farmers.
