I am getting close to the point where I can install the exhaust system on my V8 powered 54. I have some ceramic coated block huggers that were given me but the rest of the system is up in the air.
What diameter pipe should I consider using?

What brand of muffler would be recommended other than flowmaster/dynomax/magnaflow, that would give good tone without [censored] off the neighbors? No fart can suggestions please.

what size motor, and approximately how much HP. you should probably go with dual 2.5" pipes, but without know big/powerful your motor is it is hard to make a good recommendation.

The engine is a 350 SBC with approx 250 HP/300 ft-lbs torque.

based on that i would go with dual 2.25" pipes. you could go as big as dual 2.5" but not any bigger than that.

if you want to keep it quiet without getting restrictive mufflers, look at the edelbrock rpm mufflers. a lot of flow with less noise. other more economical options are turbo style mufflers, summit racing has some that are pretty cheap.

so i would suggest dual 2.25" with a crossover pipe (would add some power, and cut the sound down some also) and edelbrock rpm mufflers.

Definitely use a crossover pipe. It will make the exhaust sound better and give slightly better performance.

Er, do you have a part number on those block huggers; and does it look like you'll have room by the steering box?

Check out the pictures in my link and you will see the original steering box is not an issue on this particular build. Thanks though.

well, i was looking around, and it looks like edelbrock doesn't make the rpm mufflers any more.

a turbo style muffler should keep the sound down. the dynomax superturbo mufflers supposedly flow well, while being quiet.

A place called Night Prowlers in Lamar MO.has genuine smitty glass packs.use the 2.25or2.5 pipes. remember LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES.

Thanks all. I have picked up a pair of the Summit turbo mufflers (2.25) for my project. You can't beat their price either. Each was only $14.75 off eBay brand new from Summit. The wife liked that when I told her how proud$$ the other guys are of their mufflers.

Buy ear plugs and dont bother with a radio. LOL I had to cut them off after 1 day. They get worse with age also. I now have 1967 chysler newport mufflers on a 350 best i have found. Nice sound.

How do you know they get worst if you replaced them after one day?

What other ones did you look at?

Summit 15 buck ones i lived with them on my 265 wagon and they got louder in about 1 year.But they also rusted out pretty bad . Mount them as far to the rear as possable like in my wagon.
I had them on my truck 1 day.Getting older with 50% hearing loss and they drove me nuts.
Funny thing i sold them at the swap meet for 20 bucks each LOL Made money on a mistake for one time in my life!
Looked at flowmaster didnt want the truck to sound like the kids 5.0 next door. I really do like the newport mufflers. Found those by luck.
Everbody is diff,you may just like em. Run full tailpipes and run the mufflers all the way back next to the rear.

Currently planning to exit them out the side at the back of the running board. The camaro gas tank we installed may prevent a rear exit strategy but may be able to finagle it. Definately plan to locate them under the bed and not the cab.

I can always return these. It was hard to pass up with the price. Thanks for the feedback.

Let us all know how you like them. Even though I am a long way from needing mufflers, I have been thinking about what I want to use. I have had 3" Flowmasters on a car before and do not want to live with all that noise again. On the other hand, I do want a deep exhaust note just so people can hear me coming.

Houston54, if you haven't had em before you might want to rethink side pipes. I tried them with the 327 in my 54. Exited just ahead of the rear wheels. I always have the windows open, and found the noise intolerable, being so close to it. (OK if you have a/c and snugged-up windows, I guess, but who wants that in an old truck?) The pipes (2 1/4") run all the way to the back now. Doesn't look so cool but it saves the eardrums. Just a thought.

Also a friend had those Summits on a 68 Mustang and like DJ says they started out loud and it wasn't long before they sounded like he'd unleashed all the hounds of Hell. Might be worth paying extra bucks for a better product.

I've got $15 (each) "Cherry Bombs" on my truck. They sound great for my taste. Nothing that disturbs the neighbors ... just a nice throaty rumble. If I stomp on the gas, it sounds great, too. They've been on for almost 2 years now.

Only thing is, with highway driving ... cruising at 55-60 mph ... I admit, it gets tiresome.

Alan, yours has a 350 with Edelbrock goodies and headers, right?
So I reckon that's just your truck's way of telling you that if you go faster than 55-60 you'll (1) blow the cobwebs out of that 600 cfm carb and (2) leave the noise behind!

My side pipes weren't too bad so long as I was doing 75+. Although my wife appreciated the comparative quiet, she thought it was a tad too fast for the Safeways parking lot.

Yup -- 350 sbc with Edelbrock Performer intake, Edelbrock Performer 600cfm 4bbl carb, Block Hugger headers, mild hydraulic cam.

Same set up I will be running in my 54. May just go with the Walker OEM replacement cans ($28 ea) and move up from there if I am not satisfied.

I have my 94 Suburban dualed out now the tips pointing out at the rear corners and I can hear them with the windows up and my Pretzel Logic CD cranked.
