I am looking to get a 6 volt alternator for my 1948 Chevy 3/4 ton. adn have been looking at the ones offered by 5TH Avenue Garage, which seem to be nearly $100 more than a AC Delco-- are they worth it???

Why would you switch from a generator to an alternator and not go 12V conversion instead? Don't now what 6V AC Delco you are talking about, please give a link. No matter what you buy, you are going to get get a AC Delco or rebuilt AC Delco, modified standard 10si.

Some of these vendors may be taking This and adding
this. Your cost to do it....$54

I advise going 12V conversion. Easy to do, cheaper/more available components. See the "Tip Section" on here.

that option is available as well, but their 12v generators are equally more expensive . really new to this an very open minded looking for options, thanks for weighing in.

No problem, but be sure of your terms. "Alternator" is different than "generator". I think there are alternators that look like generators. In the UK they are all Dynamos. EMF'ers. Lots of other opinions on this. Wait for others to respond.

THIS is what I put on my '38 years ago with no issues. There are a number of reasons to want to convert to an alternator and remain 6 volt. If your wiring connections are clean and you don't want to run a high power 12v stereo thumper, a 6 volt system is just as capable as a 12 volt on your truck. I also converted my '53 to an alternator but not the one I linked to because I picked one up at a swap meet. One thing you need to be aware of is your stock mount will not work with an alternator. You'll need to also buy/fabricate a mount.

Tiny, thank for the info, very interesting.
Could you please measure from the front of the mount to the center of the pulley or belt please?

What is the full-load amperage output of one of those 6V converted 10 SI alternators?

The web site says "Output 60 Amps". Plenty enough for a 48 6V.

Probably won't be able to do that, at least for a while. It would require more stooping and bending than my back will allow. If you're referring to the universal gen to alt bracket they sell, it's adjustable to a wide range of applications. I used it on my '38 216 at first and it's now on my '53 235. Brackets for specific applications are also available from other sellers. Google "chevy 235 generator to alternator bracket" and you'll find lots of sellers.

Why would anyone pay hundreds of dollars for a modified alternator when the only thing that needs to be changed is the solid state regulator? 14 bucks VS 300-something? That doesn't make good nonsense! Even the more complex conversion kit to 6V positive ground sells for around $100.00.
