I had posted a while back about some valve problems with my '53 Powerglide 235 (hi oil pressure, hydraulic lifters). It appeared to me that I had a valve sticking open; on further investigation it turned out that the lifter was stuck at its highest position in the cam rotation. With penetrating oil and working it up/down and rotating it, I was able to free the lifter and remove it. There was significant sludge on the lifter itself as well as in the bore. As I had to grip the very top rim of the lifter with a Vice Grips to get it out, and this procedure led to a crack on the top rim and making the old lifter a bit out-of-round, replacing the lifter is now in order.
I have an NOS, correct lifter on hand. I am hoping one or two of you savvy, highly experienced Stovebolt mechanics around here might let me know if there's anything special I need to do when replacing the lifter--I know I've read something about breaking them in when replacing on other threads. Any advice will be greatly appreciated--thanks!
