Maybe it's the camera angle, but that appears to have the long nose on it. I've seen where the long nose trucks (Fire trucks, more specifically) had the 503. That and Detroit diesels. If that's not a long nose, then I'm out! Other than that, next time you go by, clean off the flat area on the block just behind the distributor. The first 3 numbers should be the CID
Not large enough for a 503. 194,230,250, 292 all look different than GMC engines, although about the same length. GMC valve covers are rounded on top with no length wise marks. Chevies have some kind of lengthwise marks. If it is a 292, the pushrod cover is about 6" high. Show a picture.

'37 GMC T-18 w/ DD 4-53T, RTO-610, 6231 aux., '95 GMC running gear, full disc brakes, power steering, 22.5 wheels and tires. '47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle. '54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed. '55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.
You may have hit the Jack Pot with that one. Can't tell for sure, but it looks to have Dayton wheels on it, and the larger, flared out wheel well fenders, of a 400, 450, or 470 series truck. It has vent door glass, so if it's a 51 model, with pull down door handles, it will have a 270ci. GMC inline 6, and if a 52, or 53 model, with push button door handles, it will have a 302ci. GMC inline 6 cylinder engine. If a 450, or 470 series, it will have a Clark 5 spd., tranny, and a Eaton, electric shift 2 spd., rear axle. Nice truck. Check for a tag, on the back of the glove box lid. If there's one present, it will tell all about the trucks spec.s A 400 series, is a 2 1/2 ton, 450 series, is a 3 ton, and 470 series, is a 3 1 /2 ton. hope it's a case of mistaken identity. be a shame, if someone put a 292 Chevy engine, in that truck.

There are two ID plates to check; one on the driver's door hingepost and one on the inside back of the glovebox door. Both contain important information on the model and driveline configuration. The 4 speed suggests to me this is likely a 400 series with SM-420. Hard to guess which is why you need the information off the ID plates.
Ok fellas. Was at truck and tried to get it started. Put bew battery in it. Turned over fine... No spark. Pulled distributor cap to file pionts a little... They were new along with condensor... Had son hit foot stomp starter while i watched points first....rotor not spinnin...? Pulled distributor... Teeth busted off drive gear. darn. Wonderin why and now need new drive gear.

So i found a complete distributor from one of our farm trucks. Its a 1950 GMC 350.
It also has the 302 engine that has been used for spare parts in past.... So, i sprayed the distributor down so it would loosen up, hope to get it out today.
Gonna use the old distributor housing and center rod as a drive rod to spin oil pump.
But first i will make sure the oil pump is freed up.... I assume the oil pump is prolly stuck and that caused the distributor gear to get stripped.
Will also check cam gear for damage.
I will have to re-time distributor for No.1 cylinder as well... Keep ya’ll posted.

Will be at the 52 GMC truck again this weekend to tinker around with it some more.. I still have not been able to locate that distributor gear drive... Summit racing was recommended by a fellow car guy... they came up with nothing.
The shaft diameter measures.491” with calipers It has 13 teeth and is 1.150” long.
Will try to post a picture on here.
If anyone has any ideas where I might find one, please chime in.

Here is pic of plate on glovebox door. Every gear I have found for distributor with correct # of teeth(13) has the gears angled in wrong direction. Grrr.

Spoke with an older gentleman today who is under the impression the distributor out of a 270 is same as a 302. Any input on this would be helpful as he has a few of them. Brian

Ok, got distributor in workin order with parts from a 270 distributor. I also need to replace the camshaft as the drive gear also has some damage. I have access to a distributor from a 270 engine.
Does anyone here know if this will work in the 302? Thanks. Brian
