I've used that method with success as well. IIRC Robert has a special flat-tip drill bit that he uses to remove the paint.

I have also used weld-thru primer and have found that it is not indestructible from this welding process.
I make sure to spray more epoxy primer after the welding has been completed. THIS is what will save your butt down the road.
