Im working on front brakes for my ‘59 GMC 100 and
noticed ? Corrosion on raceways. Also bearings were packed
In white lithium grease by prior mechanic.

Any suggestions? Need repacement or just hit with emery
cloth.
See Pics.
Tnx.

Sorry, that's more than corrosion. That's pitting, meaning the hard surfacing is coming off. Replace both bearing and race. There should be part numbers on both. Do both inner and outter bearings,as well as seal. Again it will have a part number on it. Repack bearings with wheel bearing grease or chassis grease. White lithium is too light a grease to be using as wheel bearing grease.

It looks like they sat for awhile with water in the bearing, they will roll for awhile and be noisy and will wear fast due to the rough surfaces. Might as well replace everything as long as you have it torn down.

Cheaper to replace bearing assy than to replace spindles and axles. Those bearings will leave you on the side of the road waiting on a tow truck.🛠

If you have a welder, it’s a snap. Welded metal shrinks, so running a short bead with a mig or use a tig without filler rod and they will fall out. Other ways also work, hammer and punch from back side.

Should be a couple notches in the backside on the hub to use a hammer and punch to drive the bearing race out. I'd go that route first. Be sure to tap on both sides so they come out evenly.

I just installed roller bearings in my '53 3100 & found a blog at Http://blog.brotherstrucks.com very helpful. The hardest part was hammering out the races but, with persistence, they came out ok. FYI

Thanks for all the great responses. Forum comes thru once again.
Part of me is tempted to just drive it since this basically an ocassional driver at most.
But....it doesnt look to bad a job. Rather just do it right.
Tnx.

Ignore the part of you that is tempted drive on that bearing. He does not know what a failed bearing will do to your truck, you, nor the innocent drivers sharing the road.
Changing those races is not that bad, and you will be qualified to have your Man Card stamped for performing this task. We keep close track of these things on this site. smile

I dont think you can call him a mechanic if he used white lithium grease to pack wheel bearings.

I think that bearing would do just fine for rolling it around the yard or garage! Using white lithium grease is pretty bazaar.
