12v negative ground conversion. Been working great for years.

Went out to start truck. Turned key. Pushed starter button. Engine started.

Heard strange whirring sound. Shut off key. Starter motor kept whirring away and getting hot.

Disconnected ground from battery. Did not shut off starter motor. Pulled positive battery cable. Starter shut off.

What caused this sudden and new issue? Bad solenoid?? starter grounding somewhere. Electric issues not a strength of mine.

Do you have a stop starter? Is the starter button on the top of the starter (it is a heavy duty switch) still mashed (pushed down for all y'all yankees smile ).
If so, is it due to the linkage from the stomp starter hanging up somehow?

If you removed either the positive or negative cable from the battery and the problem persisted, you have bigger problems. No matter if it’s positive or negative grounded.

Seems I might have similar issue.. how does one fix a "sticky button on top of starter"? Grease all pivot points on the linkage?

My starter runs on quite a long time after it starts and I have let off the stomp starter. It is just coasting without contacting the flywheel any longer. No electricity involved.
I have a six volt started fed by 12 volts. She gets some serious momentum going.

The "Car" starter has a solenoid. The "Truck" starter has a mechanical switch. Both can be 6 or 12 volt If the ground cable did not stop the starter, then I am at a loss how the circuit was completed. That is new to me. The solenoid can stick. That would keep the starter running and engaged. Great way to destroy the armature windings if it continues for too long. The stomp starter can fuse the switch. The starter will disengage, and still run. That will also cause the armature to overheat. But it will not throw the windings off. My 6 volt starter will coast for a bit after the engine starts, but that is not a big issue. Yes it is in a 12 volt system. But it is matched to a 6 volt flywheel. That does make a difference. So the question we need to know is this, start button, or foot switch?
