When we cleaned up the road draft tube, it seemed to have some kind of plating on it. Can anyone tell me if these tubes were plated or just painted? If they were plated, what was used? Was there material inside the "can" part? This one is empty. Our best guess is something along the lines of steel wool. Any help would be much apprieciated.

This tube has no baffle, it's just empty. Should we try to use steel wool as a baffle, with some wire cloth so the steel wool stays in the "can"? I know that we don't want to restrict the flow too much, but wouldn't it help (using steel wool) in keeping the oil misting down?

#13130 01/14/2004 3:51 PM | Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 | Mark - my observation is they were painted engine color - certainly not different just at end - I had a 50,000 mi original that had a very coarse "steel wool" sorta stuff in it and it was plugged to the point of being problematic - old mech round here said "burn it!" - I did - steel wool stuff pretty much gone - seems like the old days the burning was standard cleaning procedure, partly to rid it of the steel wool - keep "misting" down? more like change it to "drip"  mine works fine empty Bill | | |

The stuff inside the tube is actually horse hair - so it won't rust and fall out. Burn it to clean it and you burn up the hair, but not a big deal. Painted mine the color of the engine. Popped it back in with some gentle raps with a ballpine...

Ralphy-I never thought about the skunk or armadillo part of the equation, especially the armadillos. They jump staight up when they get spooked. Owww is right. Too bad I cleaned it off-could have checked it for DNA.
And Bruce, thank your dad for me. Man that horse hair must have really smelled bad when they burned it out.
