Ok, I went and ordered a new starter from chevy duty. I came home for supper and I found the new starter, but it has no selenoid! Strangest thing I ever saw. What do I do now did I order the wrong one?

1- I ordered a 12v
2- Do I have to put a new foot starter mechanism, where do I get that.
3- Can't I just replace the selenoid from my old starter.
4- Do I have to get an external selenoid for it.

Frustrated! Maybe just forget the starter and take my wife and kids along as push-start detail. smile

Thanks, Jorge

When I've bought a starter in the past for my 54, it always came without the selenoid. I just reused my old selenoid. I'm thinking that this is normal for these older starters.

The thing is I do not have an original starter, who knows what car the starter I have belongs 2. Are the modern seleniods compatible with the starter I ordered.

I just checked, no way that modern looking seleniod will fit onto the starter. The modern one fits into the housing!

The starter i ordered has a rod on it that makes the bearing come foward, I guess it's what engages the starter when u press the foot pedal.

What can / should I do.

Jorge

A little more info will help. Assuming this is for a 216/235/261 that's in your pickup, which currently has the pedal starter and has been converted to 12 volt. Chevy Duty shows a 12 volt conversion starter, I don't know just what it is. Does it have the same linkage for connecting as your 6 volt starter? If so, just put it in. If not, call up Chevy Duty and ask what it takes to put it in.

Before you bought the starter, I would have recommended finding someone local that rebuilds starters, if there was something wrong with the old one. They could have rebuilt it and converted it to 12 volts. If all you did was convert to 12 volts, the 6 volt starter will give years of service. But, I don't know just what your circumstances are.
