Hi New Chevy 3600 owner. Went out for my first drive and it could have gone better. The car was fine on the flat and would rev off load but when going up hill it starts to kangaroo and cuts out. Could only crawl up the hills in first. I’m guessing it most likely fuel related but after some advice on logical way to diagnose the problem. Car has not run since last September so wonder if the fuel is going bad. We don’t get good fuel here like you do in the USA.

A picture paints a thousand words so I made a video the action starts 5 minutes in

Thanks for any advice

Regards Chris.

Electric fuel pump ....... such an english thing to do smile

Sure would be a happy engine with the stock mechanical pump in there .

Oh , yeah , I think it sounds fuel related , especially the time left standing is relevant to this issue .

I have ordered a mechanical pump as I don’t think the electric pump is good quality. Does anyone know if mechanical pumps are directl acting or is there a push rod. I’m thinking I don’t know what behind the mechanical pump blanking plate. Regards Chris

At 6:52 of the video it looks like you still have the choke out.

Hi the choke may have been out as I was trying all the knobs and buttons to try and improve the situation. However I note at one point it wouldn’t restart without a bit of choke. I’m thinking maybe the additional carb vacuum from the closed choke may of helped draw the fuel through. I don’t think the choke was out all the time and it wasn’t when the problems started.

Looking at what your fuel looked like and I went through the same thing, is that you carb is probably filled the same way. So I would take that apart and clean it out. Also check and see if the heat riser valve on your manifold is moving and your intake isn't freezing up. I know you checked the vacuum advance but did you see your distributor move?

Had this same thing happen to me last weekend. Was leading a bunch of street rods from Myrtle Beach to home. Doing 70 to 75 north of Columbia, SC, where it gets hilly, and it hit. Limped around for 50 miles or so but knew there was no way it was going to make it up Black Mountain on I-26. Removed top of carb on side of road and internal filters where fuel is delivered to bowls were clogged. Cleaned them and bowls with rag and carb cleaner. Ran like a top again. Either bad, on the road, fuel or sitting for long periods or both caused this problem. Check/replace all fuel filters, and a can of “Seafoam” would not hurt.

Thanks for the advice all good stuff. Have the pump and filters on order. Just looking for the carb rebuild kit now. I will let you know how I get on. Regarding the vacuum advance yes it did move when I pumped the vacuum

Thanks Regards Chris

Hmmm. I thought that misfire under load was most likely an ignition issue.

I’m still think it’s fuel related. The new mechanical fuel pump and filter has arrived from the USA but I’m waiting on a gasket set for the carburettor. Not sure if I will get chance to work on it this weekend but I will update when I know. I will leave the electric pump in as a backup.

I checked the fuel pressure and found 2.5 PSI at the carburettor. Thinking back I had early warning signs as I thought the pump was continuously pumps and these normally stop pulsing when up to pressure. Replaced the Facet electric fuel pump with a Delco mechanical pump and installed new filters and hoses. I emptied out the old fuel from the filter and it did contain a lot of rust particles and rubbish. I did check the fuel flow from the tank and the flow is good so not blocked.

Went for a test drive and approximately 3 miles from home on a steep narrow single track road broke down.

Coil failed !!!!!!!!!!!
