The bumper thing...wow. How 'bout a rationalization? Who would put their 38 street rod in harms way? Another one...if someone hits you, they're gonna bend somethin, bumper or not, round or square or OEM. Now if I was going to fab a custom bumper, I'd steal a page from the designers of the 34 Cadillac and LaSalle. Anyone ever noticed or even seen one? We called them Bi-Plane bumpers. They consisted of a top and bottom section of 1/2 oval steel that followed the contour of the front end and each was separated by a round pointed "carrier" to attatch to the frame. 2 carriers front and rear. Today, you can purchase "aero tubing" used in race car construction to do a modern rendition. Any round mat'l could be used for carriers/mounts. And yeah...I'm an old gray bastid myself. Seen a lot and plan to see and do a lot more. When you think about it, most street rods don't even have bumpers.

I liked the idea about the bumper doubling as an air tank. And I think people were kind of rough on the guy that suggested it.

In my opinion, I would rather a car would total itself before harming my truck, so I'm an advocate of a strong bumper.

I guess it all comes down to what you want your truck to be for. If it's a show truck, I can understand not wanting a fabricated bumper. But if it's a driver or a work truck, I don't see why not. And if it's hotrodded, I guess there are no rules, and as always, it's an individual's decision.

I was one of those you may think was hard on the pipe bumper guy.

Go back and read his responses. I described an accident I experienced where the pipe bumper on the front of my pickup increased the damage to my truck.

In his response did he address the physics or engineering issues? No he suggested that those who disagreed were too old school to consider a new idea and perhaps even lacking in intelligence.

I don't have a strongly held position on using a bumper for an air tank, but I have been pretty clear that I think pipe bumpers are a foolish idea, and I've tried to clearly articulate exactly why I think so. And I tried to do so without calling the other guy names.

I found his replies offensive and I'm wishing I'd not bothered to read this post, because I'm feeling that offense all over again. I'll be taking a break from the Stovebolt while I cool down.

You shouldn't let a guy shake you that bad on the forum. As far as forums go, this is a really easy going one. Thirdgen.org (a 3rd gen F-body forum) is like playing in a pool full of paranhas. Corvetteforum.com has got a little bit of a snob problem. And the Shelby forums are totally full of people who are full of themselves.

Anyway, What I wanted to use for a pipe-type bumper was an original style mounting method, so that it's designed to give upon impact.
So yeah, while a little Honda might destroy itself on my rear bumper, I might have to replace my mounting arms (or straps, whatever they're called), and a minimum of bodywork, if any.

I didn't read the entire thread. When a thread descends into bickering, it bores me.

Which part of CorvetteForum - I'm in the C3 board there, it seems easygoing, for the most part. There are a few jerks, but they tend to get slapped down.

The C3 forum. I used to be moderator there. I quit a few years ago because of one of those jerks. I was one of the original people on that forum, but we were starting to have trouble with some people that had very deep pockets and endless money for frivolous lawsuits.

...I had decided getting sued was not my goal in being a moderator of a forum.

I'm of the opion that this type of environment is never the place to get upset about something someone says. We are all from different backgrounds and have educations. Sometimes we have trouble communicating what we really mean and are really trying to say in the written word. I've reread some of my posts before I've posted them and went "What?" and I wrote em!
It's hard enough to tell what a persons intent is by things they say when your looking them in the eye in person, hearing the tone of their voice let alone reading something they've written from thousands of miles away.
Best bet if you think someone is running you down or insulting you take the high road and ignore it or if need be email or PM them to clarify their meaning. Could be they are like me and just haven't had much fetchin' up.

Use the preview post option and read back through your posts before you post them and try to always put yourself on the other side of how it reads. Feelings are easy to accidently hurt and sometimes impossible to weld back together.

The Bolt's a great place, let's keep it that way!

I agree with the indivudals choice of bumpers.
Personally I believe the stronger the better...WAY back when... I found a bulldozer cutting blade edge... Dad said NO! I was going to have a SOLID bumper.... I was 17 smile ...25 yrs ago  ...life goes on....

Hey , I just posted this because it is USUALLY funny later on how we get bent out of shape over minor things. I look back on some of the things that I have gotten real mad about and most of the time it just was not worth getting my blood pressure up about! As far as what this guy said , well it could have been misunderstood since you really can't read into a person by words on a screen whether or not they are kidding around or ,does this other person not have a sense of humor and let every little thing someone says bug them? I don't know! I just think if we were all out in the garage talking trucks we would probably aproach this differently. Just my opinion.

Well I took my week off to cool off.

KC is right, the best response is to take the high road and I did let that guy get to me.

No promises responses like his won't manage to do it to me again...
