Hello All!

I am excited to say that I just got my 1948 Chevy 1/2 Ton Pickup! I had it shipped to Cape Coral Florida all the way from California.

I am doing a brake job on her right now and have a big question.

This is a 1/2 ton truck, but the rear end and rear brakes do not match up to what should be there.

The brake shoes are 2 x 12. Does anybody know how I can order these 2 x 12 shoes?

Welcome to the Stovebolt madness. There is no cure! FYI, only about 5% or less of our members visit the Welcome Center. Please post your brake questions in the Driveline Forum. shake

Gigawat, welcome to the Stovebolt. Since this is your first post we'll leave it here for other to see but as mentioned above questions are best posted in the most appropriate forum. The guys here will get you straight.....and for what its worth, many/most of us have to figure out what the previous owners have done.
You /we can do it. Good luck, see you around the garage.

Welcome aboard, looks like your 1/2 ton truck has a full floating rear axles which are normally found on 3/4 ton and heavier trucks. Your spring pack and overloads tell the story, as well as your spring mount is above the axle tubes instead of below the axle tubes which are found on 1/2 ton trucks too. If you have an open driveshaft instead of the torque tube(enclosed driveshaft) that will be the smoking gun and the reason you have the big brakes. Somebody has more than likely swapped out the big brother rear end in your truck, it probably is a really rough rider with all those leafs.

Thank you all for the warm welcomes!
I have always loved this kind of truck... seeing it in movies / tv.. Just fell in love.
I will move my drive line questions to the appropriate section. Thank you for your help! I hope that one day, I will be able to help!

All the best!

welcome to the site! Agrees, that looks like a 3/4 ton rear. (looks like 8 lug in the pics, are the front 8 lug as well?)

Are you sure the truck is a 1/2-ton? The one picture under the rear shows the springs outside the frame rails, as has been pointed out already. The frame rails look parallel instead of flared out as 1/2-tons are. Half-ton springs are under the frame. How long is the bed? Half-tons are 6 1/2' and 3/4-tons are approx. 7 1/2' long. Do the front wheels have 8 studs?
Looking closer at the picture I can see the middle stake pocket in front of the fender. You sir have a 3600 3/4-ton. Congratulations! I like 3/4-tons.
