Got the paint going on the ring area of the third rim. Mike B, looked really careful, and no L. So tried counterclockwise and got one nut, but others still frozen. Gonna hit em with more oil, soak time, and probably a bigger bar, 3/4 drive. BIG CHEVY 3600, heat will be last resort as paint on nuts, studs and especially rims is in great condition.
I wrapped up the torque tube, rear differential , rear axle and rear brake overhaul and replacement project today. Now I need a couple helpers to lift this entire assembly off my bench and place on to the springs and under the frame of the truck. Any takers out there?
Bill Trotter (above) - I lived and worked in Iron River, MI as a trainee forester back in 1986-1988.Then moved to the big metropolis of Bergland, MI , then to Ironwood, MI. Nice pic.
Last week: radiator was leaking in the '65 C10. took it out, went to my mechanic to try to find a radiator shop... found one, dropped it off the next day... picked it up a few days later, put it back in, did the dance with the anti-freeze and funnels.
Been trying to figure out which radiator I have... in case I had to buy a new one.
Worked on my box today. Installed angle strips and cut quarter sawn White oak for the bed wood. Will figure out what and how to finish them.
If going "original" paint them black...prime with POR-15 and then top coat with POR Top Coat...you won't be disappointed. If you use a clear urethane or spar you'll be redoing it every few years because they just don't hold up now that they are water based...
I did put my new MD State permanent "Life Time" tag on the fire truck! Vehicle has to be 60 years old to qualify for this tag
MINWAX "Helmsman indoor/outdoor spar urethane is not water based. MINWAX does produce a polyurethane water based product sold as MINWAX Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane For Floors. I used the Minwax indoor/outdoor HELMSMAN clear semi-gloss spar urethane 8 years ago, applying 6 or 7 coats between light sanding with steel wool. The only change is a very slight darkening of the oak boards. Of course my 51 was not rebuilt as an original, and for that reason I would recommend Mike B's suggestion of black paint and POR-15 if that is your plan.
Heater blower motor stopped working. The fuse looked good so I was stumped. Bought a box of new ones (SFE 14) from O’ Reilly. Put in a new one and shazam, I’ve got heat now!!

Installed rebuilt torque tube, rear axles with bearings and seals, turned drums, new carrier bearings, brake, lines and parts, NOS parking brake cables and made new parking brake rod, and installed new rear springs. Restored GMC gauge cluster with NOS gauges. This wasn't done just today - but occurred over an accumulation of days over the past month. 1941 GMC Next steps - put oil in rebuilt GMC 228, transmission, and rear differential and see if this thing will work...expecting many leaks.
Haven't done a darn thing for three weeks - snowed in, too cold in the garage. Long range forecast is for more of the same. Dude, where's that global warming they keep promising me?

Just finished up on a 3.55 ring and pinion install on my 53 3100, plus all new bearings. Good bye 4.11 This truck just went 65 miles an hour. Very happy, smooth quiet gears and really pretty much an easy R&R. Steve

The odometer in the '62 C10 stopped working a few years ago. I took it apart a while ago to investigate and found a broken gear in the drive section. Since I didn't have the parts to fix it, I reassembled it and put it back in the truck. The Speedometer was still working so I was good with it.
Fast forward to a couple weeks ago when I was digging in the shed and found the old gauge cluster I took out when I converted to all gauges instead of Idiot Lights. I took it apart and Hurray! The gears in that speedometer were in good shape.
Today I pulled the cluster out of the truck and made a good speedometer/odometer out of the two of them.
It's nice to know how far I've travelled. Total cost? About an hour of my labor. I think I can afford that.
It was going to be such an easy job , LOL , famous last thoughts . After a litany of complications , I finally finished the 216 > 235 swap . Goes great
Got some of the interior panels painted and installed, made new windlace for around the doors and covered the fiberglass headliner with dark brown newer style headliner material.
Completed a conversion to power front disc brakes on my ‘56. Used kit from CCP. Not for amateurs; very fortunate to have had access to well equipped garage and tools (owner retired). Otherwise, the truck remains 100% original, but this was needed for safety while driving in an urban environment. Grabbed one of the under-dash mounts for the floor vent cables from a donor truck to mount on the driver side for the proportioning valve light... looks “store bought” original.
Also, replaced the steering sector with one from the same donor truck; can “feel” the road a little better. Cruzin down the interstate at 65 mph was just glorious!
Heater/Blower fan switch went out on the '62 C10 a couple of days ago. Had to jumper the connector to keep the defrost running. Needed that in the rain we've been having lately. New switch came in today. Already installed and working like a champ!
