On my 63 Chevy step side, going to replace the boards in the bed... Started to loosen the nuts on the bottom side, kept spinning.... Finally got a carriage bolt out and the metal slats between boards have ROUND holes in them, nothing to hold sq carriage bolt from spinning..... Am I missing something, the old Round hole and Square peg doesn't seem to work here.... Gotta be a trick to this !!!
Tobz, Not sure where the replies disappeared to. I reviewed 5-6 replies to this thread previously. Did you get the info you needed or do we need to dig up the history? Dont want this question to hang if you still are looking for the answers. Bottom line: the square holes in the bed strips are rounded out. Need to cut bolts, cut heads or put vice grips on heads while someone turns nuts off or turns them to break. If you are not saving the bed strips and/or wood you may be able to get a sawz all under the heads and cut. And as you know there are a bunch of bolts. Hambone

First, I suggest heating each nut from the bottom and then let them all cool. If you don't have an gas welder setup, a propane torch will do. This will help loosen the bond between the nut and the bolt.
Then, take a 4" angle grinder with a thin cutoff wheel and slice a slot into the top of each carriage bolt. Then you can prevent the bolt from rotating with a BIG screwdriver and have someone underneath wrench the nuts off.
