Thanks | | | | Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 218 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 218 | I just removed one from a 261 which also would fit the 216 or 235. so yes they are available. The problem lies with the three dowl pins that line up the flywheel correctly on the crank. As you know one is a bit off center between the mounting holes and none of the new products are made that way. Did some cranks only have one pin on the crank? | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 28,674 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 28,674 | Those dowels are there to align the timing mark with the #1 and #6 cylinder top dead center. As long as the bolt holes align, a flywheel could be installed without dowels at all as long as the bolts are a tight fit in the flywheel holes, or just one dowel could be used if you're willing to re-mark TDC on the flywheel. Be sure to plug the unused dowel holes to prevent possible oil leaks. I'm not sure if the dowel holes go all the way through to the crankcase- - - -but I'm sure the bolt holes do. I lost a clutch from oil contamination shortly after purchasing a 59 3800 with a "rebuilt" 235 because the PO left a flywheel bolt out after cross-threading it. Jerry

I am baffled by the lack of newer flywheels being made for the 216-261, you'd think even a limited run would sellout without difficulty. I've changed my 46 1.5 to an 11" clutch for the ease of replacing the clutch if needed, now the 45 is next. thanks again

I figured they would know what they were advertising given they were jack Clifford’s source for steel flywheels (I have one I bought back in 83 or 84). Ya, right. It was the single dowel late model flywheel. When I called tech, they could not answer the question. I got a call back from one of their old school guys who explained that they did not in fact have new flywheels, although they did still have the blueprints to make them up. Cost, pretty steep at like $500.
