I have a 1955.2 3800 that's got what I assume to be a custom 8' X 10' flat dump bed with 12" wooden sides. When I got it it wasn't derivable. I really want to get it road worthy so I can enjoy it while I'm working on it and not lose interest. To make that happen first I fixed the breaks so I'll be able to stop when I get it on the road. That was a big step to me. Then I got the lights working. Now I need to make sure I can see. The truck didn't have any mirrors at all when I got it. It's too rusted above the windshield to have a rear-view mirror right now so that's not an option yet. The drivers side door I put a mirror on because it had the 3 mounting holes for a side mirror but that door has been replaced sometime in it's life. I know this because it's ORANGE and the rest of the truck is green. I think the orange door must have come off a smaller truck because the passenger door doesn't have mounting holes. Did 3800s have mirrors originally? If so how did they mount? I have two problems I'm looking for help with.
1.) The passenger door doesn't have mounting holes for a mirror. - how do I mount a mirror?
2.) The drivers door mirror is too close to see past the wooden bed rails so this mirror didn't do me much good.- how can I adjust it or change it so I can use it?
hi ethanm90 i'm not super knowledgable in the mirrors yet, i've only absorbed a bit on observations while doing other research
i think even the flat bed trucks in that year came with 1 driver side mirror only, and it would have been mounted on the cab attached is a photo of my 1950 1 ton, my mirror maybe a bit bent, but i think that's how it should look, my passenger side mirror i'm not sure if that's original or not. i think i also recall seeing a longer version of pretty much that same mirror for trucks with wide boxes on the driver side, and some folks would simply take the shorty mirror off and cut and weld and extension onto it to make it look close enough to the factory long arm mirror instead of buying the replacement one from the dealer.
i'm also looking forward to what others will contribute on this subject as i need to get my mirrors fixed up too, and my 53 GMC has all sorts of terrible bolted on mirrors that need to go. -s
thanks for the reply. I thought about cutting my mirror arm and welding it but I didn't want to ruin the chrome on a brand new LMC mirror. Might have to just do it if I don't come up with anything else.
my 55.2 6400 a mirror on the drivers door similar to the one pictured in the manual Grigg posted above. It mounts using the 3 holes in the front of the door like a pickup would. There are no holes for that mirror in the pass door though. The truck also has brackets on the doors for larger mirrors like on my 58 6400
