I recall a discussion on this item a while back and someone mentioned that they thought it was rare. What say you restoration gurus? Rare, really rare non existent? Common as hens eggs? What should it fetch on the open market?

Very rare! I have never seen one before like that before.

Steve, you need to read the entire posts. I answered your question in the post just above Don’s. Yes it is a spare tire lock for the sidemount carriers.

I missed it also because the answer was so far below the "yes......." My eyes thought signature line.
You need to determine the bolt pattern. May be Chevy 4 3/4, 6 lug, 1930's ??? However need to be sure that pattern matches when they used lugs. Pretty rare. Could be for car side mount or truck. Possibly $200-$300 to the collector. Seems like a newer Chevrolet Part Number? Someone will have a catalog maybe. The lug you show may not be the type of hardware used on the vehicle. If you found this lock actually on a vehicle, then you know the era and application already.
Sorry about that. Probably shouldn't have been partaking in adult beverages already today. Bartamos, thank you for bailing me out. I appreciate it. At least I knew what it was. Should get a couple of points for that.
I used to see those, but just the part that goes over one lug (which is really all that's needed) back in the early '70's. Back then, front mount spares (right in front of the radiator) were all the rage up here. I've never seen one that would cover more than one lug, though. Seems like it would only work on the side mount spare, so since those are relatively rare, it would make the accessory pretty rare as well. It looks from the arrangement of the cover to be a 6-lug pattern, but that's just a WAG.

Ok, I will spill all the beans. It came with the side mount carrier on a 1962 C-10 and yes it does fit 6 lug wheels. Thought y’all might like a little game of what is it but obviously you guys are in a serious mood today. Maybe some more of Rugo’s adult beverages are in order.

Still a bit early here, but I'll be working on that later.

Adult beverages are being disposed of at our house right now. Time to check the smoker again and back on topic.
Martin I could tell what it was by the pictures, But I have never seen one of that style.

I was hoping someone would recognize the part number. I have no clue who manufactured it. While I appreciate the links above, posting EBay and/or Craigslist links is not allowed in the garage forum.

jorb, I searched before I posted and saw most of those. Never found one like Martin's. If Martin is asking if it's Rare or is it Scarce, you have to pick one. You can't say "Yes"
33 Years. Now with a '61 261, 848 head, Rochester Monojet carb, SM420 4-speed, 4.10 rear, dual reservoir MC, Bendix up front, 235/85R16 tires, 12-volt w/alternator, electric wipers and a modern radio in the glove box.
Well, just for giggles I googled the part number. After wading through all the non-automotive stuff I found a link to the 67-72 Chevy Truck site. Shows exact item but gives no manufacturer. Sorry, I do not know how to post links. Very interesting.
bartamos, Just doing my job.

1929 - 1957 Chevrolet Master Parts & Accessories Catalog Group # 7.679 HOUSING-CASE, Wheel Carrier Lock 53-57 COMMERCIAL (PICK-UP) (side mounted) ......CASE, (for lock cylinder 606076)....... Part # 379477
GMC Housing Part # 379476 (check attached photo) one digit off.
My Hunch, Chevy did not offer a 3 lug cast iron cover just the housing, cylinder & nut. GMC offered a housing, cylinder & nut plus a 3 lug cast iron cover, but there were 2 covers for 2 groups of truck models.
Bartamos, it was only a matter of time before some youngster came along and dethroned you.

Brutal, Hope you guys don't open a Stovebolt Jail for rule breakers. I would feel sorry for bartamos if he has to do time in the SB Jail. I'd send him a cake with a file in it.
How'd I get drug into this inappropriate behavior fest? Dang Alvin, I thought we were cool, and now you come in and harsh my buzz. Now Martin has to move me to the Spoon. Time to lock this one up, Martin.

Yup, so far off topic it’s the only humane thing to do.
