Hey guys I have been gone for a few years but back and I really need to catch up on all your stories and threads.
Can you help with my title question please. Paul

I have a 1951 Chevy 1/2 ton for sale. I have a clear NC tile for it. Question from buyer is why doesn't the vin plate match the title number.
Vin plate has very few numbers and letters and title has several and none match. I am thinking these trucks were originally titled in different ways some by cab number and some by engine block.

Most by engine block in those days. Most folks that changed out Engines didn’t bother to make it right with the titling State.

What is the code(s) on your title and or registration?
What is the code on Vehicle Serial Number plate?
What is the Engine Serial Number?

I had a very interesting time getting my Suburban registered in NC.

Has your Vehicle Serial Number plate ever been removed from the truck - for painting the dab, for example?

This is the only reason I kept the original 216 block that came in my 53. Even though transfering the title was straightforward between states, it is the next owners piece of mind that the engine number is the VIN at least it was in Washington and Oregon in 1953

I'm in process getting a 50 model updated in Virginia from titled by engine number to the cab/truck serial number.
They are aware that vehicles had been titled by engine number and at least in VA seem willing to make the correction after submitting a form, title in your name, money, and a lengthy wait (1.5 months and counting). Next someone will come to inspect the truck and relevant numbers. Finally I assume I'll get a fresh corrected title in the mail, but we haven't gotten that far to know for sure how it pans out.

If you end up doing something similar for NC find out for sure, and double check, then ask again where exactly you should send the paperwork. I sent it to the Virginia DMV, the PO box and all exactly as listed and instructed on the form. They still haven't seen/found that one going on two months later, apparently I should have addressed it to a particular department within DMV, they only tell me this after the fact.. While the first attempt churns its way through the various offices perhaps for 3 months or more (their guess).. I sent a second attempt as later instructed (already received and in process). Also get a signature confirmation when mailing it.

A large-truck and antique-vehicle inspector had to inspect my trucks before I received a registration/plate for my 1954 Chevrolet Suburban.

This is supposedly a statewide requirement in NC.

He/they would not register my 1954 Suburban because it had no ID stamped into the frame (even though I showed them GM documentation that there was/is no frame stamp/ID). I showed him three 1954 frames, and the 1954 Chevrolet Truck Shop Manual information regarding the location of the ID plate (and the Chevrolet Truck Specifications Manual).

He was just about ready to work with me, However. since my ID plate was removed when the cab was painted, the inspector rightfully stated "who knows what vehicle that ID tag originally came off of".

I had to get a bonded title for my truck that had been continuously registered in my name in two different states since 1981. I will have to get another bonded title for the 1954 pickup that is in my garage, which is being restored (and was registered in my name in NY).
