If your horn currently works, you might want to disconnect the battery before you start monkeying around with the horn button. Beep! Beep!

That is a great reminder about disconnecting the battery! My horn button was looking shabby so I was thinking of removing it to get a nicer one. Once I cleaned it up- it now shines bright like a mirror.
Awesome. Glad to hear it worked out. I have 4-5 chevy horn buttons strewn about the garage as decor. My daughter used one as a belt buckle while she was in High School. The good ole days.

Wait!! You haven't removed it yet? Gonna take some pics of mine tomorrow. It might help.

Fully chrome plated underneath accenting the "Chevrolet" and 3 lines underneath. Painted on top of the chrome, everywhere else.

I think that the standard interior color would indeed look pretty spiffy. Can you imagine how much work it would be to paint the entire surface and then wipe the paint off of the lettering and triple lines? Sounds like a fun winter project for me, especially since I have a couple cans of interior paint.

cmayna: here’s my painted horn button. The chrome on it was dead and the button had a few small dents in it. I sandblasted the button and worked out the dents. I then sprayed it with three lights coats of grey. Then I sprayed it with two light coats of black. Next came the tricky part: using some 320 grit, I wet sanded the lettering and the triple lines and the outer perimeter feature line, LIGHTLY AND VERY CAREFULLY and WITH VERY GOOD LIGHTING, sanding thru those two top coats of black to expose the underlying grey. I will admit that on my first attempt my sanding was too aggressive and I had to repeat the whole process, there’s a steep learning curve here to develop the technique to not sand those high spots too much. Once satisfied, I shot the whole horn button w two coats of clear. It has held up perfectly....I did it about 5 years ago and I think it still looks pretty good as you can see by the picture I just took. It was a good winter project, took some time, and at least one 12 pack. Painted Horn Button
Good luck, Dave
Tom, take a small flat blade screw driver and pry in the gap between the outer edge of the metal Horn Button and the rim of the steering wheel; carefully pry the Horn Button upward toward yourself, it should come up and out.
I can see your pictures now, they look great. I guess the only way to do it is to just do it. Does it just snap back on? Do I need to line up the three ears....?
Tom, if it hasn’t been removed in a loooong time it might fight you when you try to remove it. Pry from several different spots. It’s should come loose without damaging the Button. You might want to try to protect the edge of the plastic wheel from damage from the side of the screwdriver. Alignment during re installation is determined by the odd shape of the horn button. “Just do it!”
