I am glad to report that I've found a method for adding front disc brakes to my 1949 GMC 1 Ton. I think it will work for the Chevys as well. I used wheels, rotors, calipers, bearings, and brake lines from a 1973 3/4 ton Chevy two wheel drive truck. I tack welded clips on the wheels (available from Jim Carter and others) for the hub caps to fit. Take the bearings to a machine shop and have them turn steel bushings with an inner diameter to fit on the spindle (use old bearing races as guides) and an outer diameter to fit the 1972 bearings). I installed a proportioning valve in the brake system as well. ( That is assuming you have already installed a dual master cylinder). Drives and stops like a dream!

Sounds like good material for a tech tip.

Detail photos and a detailed write up (in .doc or .txt format) would be very nice. Send it to editor@stovebolt.com

Thanks,
John

John,

Thanks!

I really should have taken more pics, but was rushed in the final stages of getting this truck ready for my daughter's wedding. She's 21.When she was 16/17, she was right there with me sanding paint, helping put in the window glass...and getting dirty and greasy. When she got married, she wanted to depart the reception in the truck. We literally finished the conversion about two hours before the rehearsal dinner the day before the wedding. All worked out, but I didn't accurately document the process in pics. It shouldn't be much trouble to remove the rotor and caliper to get good pics of the existing spindle with the "shims" in place.

Over the next few weeks, I'll try to rebuild the process with part numbers, pics etc and will place it in the new tread you created for me. Thanks for all you do!

I like this idea. I'm trying to stick with originality on mine, but man as crazy as people drive these days, it would be nice to be able to stop on a dime!

I fabbed mine. I started with a plywood mock-up, adjusted it until I had the right shape, size and distance to hold the caliper. I then had a friend it cut out of 3/8th inch steel plate. It cost me $20.
