Hi, I am Tom live in S.E. Kansas. And I have a farming problem. Yeah I know no help for that here. Have a couple of GM medium trucks. Well used. What brings a nice guy like me here? The cursed 10 bolt corporate wheels and other obsolete things like brake drums and no power steering. I think I am needing a fourth rotator cuff surgery.

So I had 2 of the real accuride 28160 wheels bought several years ago for 62.00 apiece if you can believe that. As my 9.00-20s' wore out my search for more wheels began and then I found they had broken the center die and were NLA. We had the internet by then and ran across a post by "bergie" about wheels now and the import wheels.

"Now to what has brought me here." I finally had to get some new tires and am getting to old to fight the split widowmakers so starting with Hey machine I was led to Cross midwest tire (about 40miles away) made contact with them and got 4 of these 22.5 rims coming. Free freight if I didn't rush them. Rounded up some nice casings from Becker tire and was all set. I thought. When I got the wheels home I could see they had a thicker web .096 roughly. Then at truck mounting they consumed all the stud preventing from getting a full nut of threads I would really like longer studs or thinner wheels. I have done numerous google searches with no satisfactory results. Am hoping someone here has the answer. Thanks Tom

Hy Tomm, welcome, firstly without you telling us what year and size of truck (model designation preferred for identification) we can't even begin to check on parts availability. My personal thoughts are that your new wheels are simply too thick for the studs that might be available. Please tell us what truck we are dealing with and we will try to help.

Tom, you’re new so we’ll cut you some slack (not much) and nudge you gently to ALWAYS include make, model and year of what you’re working on with every post in the garage forums. We can’t help you if you don’t help us. BTW, welcome to Stovebolt.

Dorman products makes a lot of studs in different dementions. If you get a parts man that can look them up or maybe on the internet you could find some longer studs.
It will be nessesary to pull the hub/drum assembly to install them.

Martin, Sorry I was just jabberin' away there and forgot. Kinda like climbing out from under the truck,crawling over to the toolbox and thinkin' what am I here after. Regardless It is a 70 C50, 350 2 barrel, 7000 lb. front axle with 9000 lb. springs 15000 lb. rear axle with I don't remember what springs. A rather odd configuration in my opinion but have overloaded it numerous times without bending anything obvious except the frame and yeah it has a little sag in it. Don't know why it is not double framed or at least fished. 15 by 3 front brakes and 15 by 5 inch rears.
I just was hoping someone had already encountered this problem. I will have to hire me a day hand if I pull the rear hub. Don't know if the old back can handle it anymore.
George on a side note I don't think I would like demented studs.

I also have a 46 1 1/2 ton that has been kinda moldering in the shed a few years need to get back on it and put it to work. Tom

Hy Tomm, now that we at least know the year and size of the truck in question, could you tell us the thread size of the studs you have now. I am going to assume you have ten stud wheels on the 8 3/4" bolt circle. The stud section is a large one in the parts book and there are at least two different thread sizes listed 11/16" X 16 t.p.i. and 3/4" X 16 t.p.i., the parts book may not list studs that are long enough to allow mounting of aluminum wheels, but any info you can give us will help to track down studs which may be long enough.

Hey sorry about that. Thought it was one of those situations where if you have the 28160 wheels you had only one kind and size of stud. Yes they are 11/16". I too have a Gm parts catalog. And found an 11/16 stud part no. that I chased to a dorman 610-158 which is 3-1/4 long. I have in the glove box an extra replacement stud that is just shy of this length by about .004". Since there is no stud sticking out more than the others around it I can see there would need to be an even longer stud.
When I purchased the truck it had a broken stud which I replaced and had purchased this extra one to keep Murphy away. Tom

I went with 22.5" wheels and new recaps on my '56, love them. Didn't have the stud length issue though, hope you get something figured out.
