Looking to gather information. Do any of you all have any old technical manuals, parts catalogs, sales literature for PTO's used in old trucks in the 1930's-1980's? I am on the quest for any part numbers for any brand/model of PTO and the transmissions that they are designed to fit. Does not necessarily have to be specific to Chevys.
Thanks in advance for looking through your "truck stuff" literature!
I have a 1958 J. C. Whitney & Co catalog that has a page of PTO "Power Take-Offs For All Trucks" (it list columns of PTO's for many brands of trucks) . Has parts numbers but not PTO manufacturers.
Paul, The older JC Whitney catalogs are cheap pulp paper with sometimes tiny print. I will attach a scan of the 1958 PTO page , but the file size may not be easy to read. The section on PTO's was 1 major page, and another adjoining page had other truck transmission info (like devices for converting 3 speed to 4 speed). You can also possibly search the interwebs for any PDF versions of older JCWhits that someone may have scanned and posted. The fleabay will oft have some 1950's -1960' JCWhits for sale. Finally, search fleabay and other sources for ARROW or SPICER 1950's-60's documents as they had a lot to do with PTO's on transmissions. Good Luck with your search!

I finally took some time to examine the 1958 JC Whitney catalog page that Soggy contributed. Looks like there are only a total of 13 different PTO combinations at least from the 1928-1958 sample years. The sample set examined is only for single speed rear output PTO models. These all look to be the smaller series sizes as what Parker would now call a 100 series PTO. Some of the early straight cut gears in the non-syncro and Clark era can easily be differentiated from the later helical cut gear era further aiding in identification. The gear position of "engaged" and "disengaged" is much different on the big 3 manufacturers so that can aid in differentiating one variety of PTO from another. The gear position on Chevy (Muncie) seems to be unique from all of the other truck companies. Interesting to note that the Clark 5-speed transmission was used by REO, Dodge, Ford, GMC, and International and all of them used a similar PTO.
There is one part differentiation that I cant really understand pertaining to the Chevy trucks. One part number is listed for 1948-1950 Chevy trucks and a different part number for 1951-1958 Chevy trucks. I thought all of the SM420 transmissions were essentially the same from 1947-1967? What was the change at the 1950-1951 year?
Getting closer to making some sense of the myriad of part numbers on later PTO manufacturers, namely Chelsea. Perhaps if we could assemble a list of other PTO part numbers found on "trucks in the wild", a trend may appear. If you happen to be under your dump bed Chevy, please take note of the PTO brand and part number and pass it along.
Paul, My 1950 Chevy COE, model 5700 has a Spicer PTO. I found the following code; AANC-7-14. This a single speed unit, cable controlled. Kent
Thanks Kent! I will look at the numbers on some of my PTO's on known applications and share them as well. I will start a compilation and maybe even see some duplicating numbers.
Spent some time under my 1941 Chevy GI dumper. The PTO on this rig is made By Central Fibre (which is oddly enough made in CHELSEA, MI). The model number is a simple 2-B. The transmission is the standard non-sycromesh 4 speed as used on 1937-47 trucks.
Please send me some more PTO brand/model #/transmission applications that you have on your trucks.
Here is another PTO, this one is an aftermarket Chelsea on a 1942 non-synchronized four speed. The stamp numbers are real faint so I am not 100% positive, but pretty sure: 8282DTW
Come on guys, I know there are a bunch of dump bed Bigbolts out there, share some PTO numbers.
That's a neat picture you posted Soggy! That dual PTO is awesome. Wounder if there are many around? I have PTOs for both my trucks. I think one is a Spicer. It runs off levers. The other is a Chelsea. It is operated by a pedal in the floor. I'll try to post pictures later.
I have 2 PTO's on the floor...I took them both off of SM-420 transmissions.
The first one is a Spicer one gear, there is no tag (never looks like it had one)...there is a casting number (maybe a date code) "X1C".
The second one is also a Spicer with a riveted tag Model "HNC 13". This unit has two gears and has a 1:2 ratio (one turn of the transmission gear gives two turns on the output shaft).
I'll look at the tow truck when I have time and report back with that info.

Thanks Mike, the additional input is appreciated. When I get more numbers, I will compile all of these and hopefully it will help someone in the future. Paul
