on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2011 Posts: 1,609 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2011 Posts: 1,609 | Hey all,
I recently came across several older PTO units not attached to any particular transmissions. A cursory google part number search has come up with little to no useful information pertaining to the application. Spicer, Perfection, and Chelsea are some of the brand names involved. It seems that over the years all of these companies have been absorbed/taken over/bought out through time and with each merger all past history is purged. Parker seems to be the current brand name but they are completely worthless with any ID help...if a part is more than 10-15 years old, they just say it is "obsolete". I am positive I am not the first person to search for the "PTO Identification Holy Grail", any tips or leads?

Helical vs. straight cut gears, pitch of gears, depth of driven gear into trans., are requirements for matching.
Books for matches are hard to find, even PTO shops do not share. Easier from a business standpoint is to sell new PTO.

I have been messing with PTOs for almost 60 years. If I don't know what they fit, I scrap them. Even if you think they appear to fit, they may not work right. And you can waste a lot of time shimming them and still not have something that works. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2011 Posts: 1,609 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2011 Posts: 1,609 | Thanks guys. I don't see matching up these PTO units quite as fatalistically as I have successfully mated unknown PTO's to transmissions a couple of times. I will rephrase my question in the bigbolt section. I am certain there has to be some old part number books floating around somewhere, just need to find them. | | |
