Is there a way to tell by looking from the outside if a Chevy has had an engine swap to a newer engine that has insert bearings?

Yes. The serial number stamped on the block will identify the size, year and where manufactured and from that info it can be determined if the engine is a full pressure engine with insert bearings or an earlier splash/pressure engine with babbitt bearings.

The side panel size is another indicator but it's not fool proof, the engine serial number is the best way to tell next to dropping the oil pan.

Good luck

If there is no oil distributor cover on the left side of the engine, you have insert bearings.
