Got the engine going, a 56 or 57 235 from a car (flywheel and clutch from 53 216 out of my truck) i thought i had tdc on piston 1 when i initially set valves before (i used a piece of wire and air definitely came out the spark plug hole) and i was real close to that bb on the flywheel. After starting and really thinking the timing was off, my cousin, the mechanic, looked at it and said when he found tdc the flywheel was very close to an arrow on the flywheel. He said he wasn't sure if that arrow was 180 degrees off, but thought it was close. Is it possible the gear on the crank was put on wrong? Or that this is the mark to use? Not sure about this.

It runs - and better than when it was on the bb. The carb we got to start it is shot so the first time i ran it i blamed all the rough running and backfiring through the carb as a carb issue. After my cousin did this, it ran much better. Still needed throttle open too far due to the carb, but other than having to kerp rpms higher, it ran with no other problems.

Was the cam gear and crank gear indexed together correctly. The dot on the crank gear must line up with the dot on the cam gear or else the valve movement will be out of phase.

To be honest, my cousin put all that together. As carefully and with as much reading as he did though, i cant imagine it wasn't, but i can ask him. The valves seemed really good though. I know i have to readjust but i didn't hear any noise or anything from them and running was pretty smooth (as i said, at higher rpms).

By the way, i forgot to say, its a 235 from a 56 or 57 car. I'll edit the op to say that.

Edit: Also, he hooked his timing light up to #1 and it was lighting near that arrow if that helps anyone help me figure this out.

What is the current issue ?

What is your rpm set at?

Did you go through the initial timing as laid out in the shop manual

a flywheel can only go on one way, so no it can not be 180 out
