I've got a 1955 first series that will be just the daily driver, ride around truck. I've blasted my frame and im ready to put some paint on it. I ordered some POR-15 from Jim Carter yesterday but just base coat not chassis top coat, my question is this. Do i need a metal prep before this, because they say you dont need a metal prep on the Jim Carter website? Also i was wondering if this could be a top coat for my chassis seeing how im not looking for a show truck. Thanks

I do like to metal prep when ever posible though. Just added protection. But I live in New England on the coast so we need every thing we can get.

Joined: Mar 2000 Posts: 1,177 | Por15 should never be applied to bare metal without using the Metal Ready. It was designed to be painted directly over rusty metal that has been cleaned but not removed. If you sandblasted the frame so that it's rough to the touch, you should be able to apply the Por15 with no problem. If you've blasted it to a smooth finish, you need to use Metal Ready. Metal Ready is designed to solve the problem of adhering to smooth metal by prepping the metal so the Por15 will stick. (If you have the money, I'd apply the Metal Ready anyway.)
As far as finish goes, Por15 will fade to a dull finish if exposed to the sun for a few days. If you don't mind that look, there's no need to paint over it. If you're going to paint over it, you need to prep it first, either by sanding the Por15 to rough it up or by using the topcoats they have designed to bond with the Por15.
The back half of my frame is done in Por15, and it worked fine but faded quickly. I've since painted over it with gloss black. | | |
