I'm looking at a couple 1 ton flat bed dually Chevy trucks. One is a C30 and the other an Apache 30. One has a title and the other is a parts truck. The C30 plate on the driver side post has some info on trim and paint colors etc but where would you find other info, vin and engine and trans info etc? 10,000 lb GVW rating but there has to be more than this, right? The C30 engine is not thought to original, the Apache reportedly has a 283 engine. Both have 4 speed transmissions.

The A pillar tag is supposed to be the VIN plate NOT the data plate. The Data plate is under hood. Sometimes on kick panel. You need to post good clear pics of this plate.. The 1T was available with a 235 STD, 261 or 283 RPO.
"Apache" name was started in 1958 and transitioned to "C" in the early sixties. C30 is 1T and Apache is "light duty Chevy truck".
Assume you are talking about the "A" pillar post. I really don't believe a data plate should be on that skinny frame area. My W.A.G. is something fishy. Obviously the title has a VIN. The VIN should be correct for the truck. There should be a plate somewhere that has that same VIN on it. In the proper location. With the proper rivets. If not, it's all fishy.
Generally, the VIN has no motor, diff or trans info. You get that from visuals, serial numbers and cast numbers/dates. To see what drive train ended up in the truck over the years.
You have a big GMC. Are you building a fleet of haulers?
Thanks, the vin on the '63 c30 is on the driver door pillar, seems original. Truck has a 350 in it now and known to NOT be original. Truck is very dirty and dusty but I plan to pressure wash this weekend. Then I can get better pics. Per the vin this truck came from the Baltimore plant with just a chassis and cab but with what engine originally is a mystery to be unearthed.
The '62 Apache will be a parts truck and if that 283 is original I may eventually swap out the 350 in the other one after a rebuild on the 283. This will not be built for show but want to keep near original. Will be a work truck when running. Will get the Apache later this week, and dig up more "dirt" on it then. The Apache does not have split rims at least on the front as I have them here. The C30 wheels are different. Thanks
Edit to note previous data plate location on driver side under dash area, not pillar.

Lots of changes between '62 & 63 Frame Front suspension Engine mounting
I see... I guess I'll order some more books that may help. Is there a way to know what type of engine was in the truck when it rolled off the line? That was the gist of the original question. Once I pressure wash it then more will (may) be revealed. ;-) Thanks for the heads up on the model year changes. I'll get good pics and do some more research.

Thanks B, a fleet of haulers ;-). Guess it's like my old tractor obsession, ha ha. The '60 is a big old girl and it looked lonely so I found a little friend for it. Now all I need is to find the right 6066 pickup for my daily driver and I'll have a full set. Gotta love this forum. Thanks for a smile after a tough day at my real job...
