I recently bought a set of defroster adapters that fit under the dash from Tom Myers. When I get them, one looks original and will need some sanding and painting. The other one, while the top opening seems the same, the bottom portion the hose fits on is a 1/2" larger.

I would assume both adapters would be identical. Am I wrong and there are two different looking adapters for a 1946 Chevy truck??

1946 trucks defroster defusers take 1 1/2" diameter duct hose. Later (AD) trucks used 2" hose...sounds like you got a mixed pair.

That's what I thought. The diameter looks like 1/2" larger on the second one. I may use the one for a pattern and have a welder friend fabricate me two from Stainless Steel. My car is not original so it won't matter.

What burns me is he said he had them, and tells me how hard they are to find. takes my money and sends me this crap! I'm not happy!

Thanks

Dan,

Sorry about receiving the mixed pair. Our average on this part is not too high is it? I'm especially surprised that Tom Myers would have sent you a mixed pair although he did tell me that he more than likely had previously sold the pair that I bought to Bowtie Bits. I did receive my "new" adapters yesterday and have posted the photos here. As you can see there is a big difference between the two. :hammering:

Don,

Mine looks similar except the tops match it's the bottom that's different! I need to take some photos tomorrow and send them to you! I have them at the office and want to make sure the one I get fabed from Stainless will be the right one!

I wonder about the ones that were bid on EBAY??? They went for some major bucks and I hope they were the right ones for the cost!

We are getting major rains today and they show more for tomorrow. I should have time to get the pictures to you tomorrow evening!

Thanks,

Dan

I sure hope so too! wink The "major" cost may be better than paying less and getting something that is junk and won't fit.

These things seem about as rare as the front motor mount retainer. I've got a story to tell about that also, but will do that later...

Take care and I'll be looking for the pictures. Let me know if you need any better photos from this end.

Send an e-mail to Roger Kaster. He restores old Chevy heaters. I bought the outlets for my 38 through him. The e-mail I have for him is: bkaster0405@rogers.com
If the addy is still good he may be able to help.

Thanks I'll try to email him and see if he can help. If he has a set great, if not, if he can identify which of the two I have is the correct one I will get some made out of Stainless!

Thanks!

Dan - Here is a series of pix showing the configuration and dimensions of the correct defrost adapters . If you backspace in the album you will see pix of the difference in adapters I've been sold.

Hope this helps.

Don, I assume the one you have in the pictures with the L on it is the one for a 46, the left side?? The other is for a 47 and later??

No, just the opposite. I thought that I had identified them with the photo titles. The smaller adapters are the ones that fit my '41 perfectly and I would assume would fit your '46.

Perhaps the "L" one and the mate "R" would fit the later trucks. The L&R stamped ones are the ones that have the funky clip on the mounting bracket and the shorter distance between the bracket face and the outlet.

I just took a look at the album and all of the pix from the link to the end (clicking the right arrow) are the correct adapters. I would be more than happy to sell you the L&R marked ones for what I paid for them.

I guess I misread your message. I thought the one I have with the "R" stamped on it was the correct one, and I sent the other back to Myers! Darn! Are you sure? The other one is shorter fatter and has a larger opening!

Yes, I'm sure. Just to make sure you are sure I'll link the specific photos:

Short and fat fits through dash slot
Narrow outlet one will not fit through dash slot as it is too long
Correct adapter on the right
Perfect fit! Notice the mounting holes in dash line up with adapter tabs

The ones with the "L" and "R" will not fit for several reasons; 1. The outlet slots are too wide and 2. The outlet slot length from mounting flange is too short, therefore will not penetrate dash slot.

I feel your pain as I've been there many times recently. :hammering:
