On a 216. Which product do you guys recommend? One side of gasket or both sides? Any other tips? Thanks!

Depends on the gasket. You will need to know what the gasket company says. Many gaskets say NO sealer at all. Use Felpro and search the gasket number for instructions if there are none in the package.

It's hard to go wrong with a brush-on liquid sealer like Permatex Super 300. I've been using it for close to 60 years so far without any problems.

a thin layer on the pump side of the gasket if nothing else to keep the gasket from being misaligned while the pump is being mated to the block. I haven't had any problems so far.

I don't like to speak badly of a product, Jim but please don't use Indian Head shellac sealer. Once your engine heats up, this stuff will melt, run out of the joint and then the seal will fail. I'd use what Jerry suggested or the Permatex Aviation sealer.

Jim,

Permatex makes a sealer specifically for your application. It's called Water Pump & Thermostat Housing Gasket Maker. The part number is 22071. Although it can be used instead of a gasket a light coating on both sides of a gasket seems to work really well.

I found out the hard way to NOT use Permatex Hylomar HPF to seal coolant.
