Well, after a decade of service from the generator I rebuilt back about '05, she
finally gave up the ghost. Had the front ball bearing go to ell on me last winter and
for some reason.....now the commutator is shorted to the shaft/lamination's.
A picture no one wants to see, shorts light is on in the growler.

Now.....I thought I had a spare that a buddy gave me years ago when he
converted his to 12v, but, after searching the barn for two days, nota.

Well first off, thanks much to the guys that pitched in and helped out. I may be able to salvage enough parts
to make up three generators.

Now.....the little Gits 1/4" shoulder drive oil cups with the flip-up covers are almost always rusted/bent/broken off
or missing so I figured since I'm going to be devoting this month to generator and starter rebuilding, I orta pick up
a dozen or so oil cups. Generators all have at least 2 and some 3.
First place I looked, since I've already got an order ready to go, was McMaster Carr. They bowled me over with
$4.30 ea. priced in quantities over 10, plus the shipping (UP$) and tax.
So....I go online. figure the Chinese gotta be knockin' these out for .50c each with free shipping, but noooooo!
Seems Gits has the market cornered. Some places are pricing them as high a ten bucks...EACH! And these
are the little 1/4" un-threaded jobs I'm talkin' about. It's just a 1/2" of 1/4" thin tube with a cap on it.
Been manufactured the same way by Gits since the turn of the 20th century over 100 years.ago.
Is this nuts or what!!!!!!
Anybody ever find a better source....please.....post it, I'll stock up on a couple dozen.

So ya bunged up your threads pullin' the pulley and end plate off un your generator.
Not to worry, just chase it with a die. Oops.....you say it mics out right around 669"????
Whoa there hoss!!!! that taint no English thread size. So getting the thread gauges out
I come up with a 1.25mm pitch. Ya mean Delco-Remy was using metric threads in the
40's???? Yep. m17x1.25 special fine thread on those 6 volt Delco generators.
So don't screw up your armature by thinkin' it's got some sort of special English thread
it's by gollly, sho nuff metric.

Hi Denny,
I have a 6v generator in the attic. I remember the little flip up oil things were gone but I was told it worked when I got it. If my memory is right, somebody had stuck a little plastic plug where one of the oil gizmos went. No idea what year it was, please send a PM.

What happened to your post, Denny?

Some of us miss you.

Miss interpreted the meaning to some replies Tim, had to rethink it.
Been busy taking care of Shangri La, building new tools for the shop,
Honey Do projects, you know what it's like moving into a new place,
and trying to get a little something done on the Cyclekart.
Had to put my '54 on the back burner for a little while till I get things
in some sort of recognizable order.

You doin' anything since your move, besides sittin'
on the beach watching the sun rise and playin' with
the grandkids???

I didn't buy or barter and no one sold me a generator core.
Again, thank you to the guys that responded by gifting me
with enough pieces to get me back up and running.
After 8 months of not being able to drive my driver, I'll now
get to spend the summer with the old gal.

I have been worried about you with all of your recent self-inflicted distractions.

And Carl, I got four new distractions this spring to restore.
Pecto 255 slitter/crimper
Grizzly 52" stomp shear
Grizzly 51" Slip Roll
and a Ben Pearson Tubemaster Pipe Bender, which
(needs LOTS of tender loving care to restore it.)
And that dang grass keeps on a growin', the bushes all need
trimming and I got a dozen BIG stumps that need to come out.
And yesterday was a day I never should have set foot in the shop.
The 50 year old Delta motor on my band saw crapped out on me,
and the Makita 4 1/2" grinder switch went south on me, and I screwed
up the Vee block in my press doing a test till it failed on a 3/4" grade 8 bolt
now I have to spend the morning making a new set up.
So....as you can see, besides getting a generator together
for Old Blue and possibly one for the '54, I've been a busy
little old man.
Now since this all isn't strictly related to an electrical issue.....I'll probebly
get my knuckles whacked with the ruler for posting it here and not in the
PUB! But.........it is my thread......isn't it????

Nobody is out to whack anyone's knuckles, so go easy on Rusty -- he's just doing what I asked him to do. And he got you doing 64 in a 55 zone and let you off with just a verbal .... Besides ... the thread looked suspect to me, too. Soliciting for parts doesn't require an exchange of money to be a Swap Meet candidate, and threads in the *Electrical* forum should pretty much be about *electrical* stuff. The rules are that way from painful experience gained from being too lax with this stuff and having to burn down a forum that had gotten out of control.

I know some of you guys have a lot of experience that transcends our simple little categories and it bleeds over. In the interests of letting the others gain from all that, we do kinda look the other way here and there when some of the grey beards blur the boundaries. But I would certainly appreciate it, and so would our volunteer moderators, if some of you would refrain a little from seeing how close and how often you can dance to the line.

I'm not picking on you, Denny, but you asked so here's the answer.

Okey dokey John, then I guess we best close out this thread. I'd planed on posting pictures of the
rebuild of the generators that were gifted me because of this thread,
Would have been a complete run down of the rebuild from problems with a difficult disassembly
to testing and removing the field coils, then testing the armature on a Sun Growler and turning
down and dressing the commutator.
But I'll not waste any more time with all that since it's quite clear that it doesn't belong here.
