The gasket thickness is approximately equal to the depth of the intake manifold rings that protrude from the head. Because of this I have been unable to get all 3 rings to mate to the intake manifold openings. I'm curious as to how others have made everything line up without the manifold rings protruding past the gasket.

I had the same issue you did installing the rings in the intake and trying to get the rings to line up with the head.

This should help align the manifold to the head so that the alignment rings will go in as the gasket compresses some.

Following Dragsix's lead, I moved the rings from the head to the manifold, then using masking tape I positioned the gasket in precise alignment against the head. After that it wasn't too difficult to get the manifold lined up and install the bolts. I'm getting closer to firing up my new engine. Just need to turn it to TDC, install the distributer, and mount the radiator on the engine dolly.

'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.
