I'm tearing down an S 10 t5 with an aluminium speedo drive gear, I've removed the retainer clip and applied a little force to slide gear off shaft but it won't budge..
does it require brute force or am I missing something??

If you are speaking of the reluctor wheel, then it will take a bit of force. Tap it firmly using something that makes contact at 2 points 180 degrees apart so the force is parallel to the shaft. See attachment.
