It's not just RPM but also the inchs of vacuum that shouldbe considered
With a 235,228,248,You may find there is just not enough torque to support passing and climbing power! 3:90s with a five speed O/D works pretty good cause you can shift down to 4th and pass or climb. A 3:55/3 spd/small motor combo may end up a real dog and not get the mileage your looking for.

#12610 06/09/2002 12:37 AM | Joined: May 2002 Posts: 20 Member | | Member Joined: May 2002 Posts: 20 | Yes, if your gearing is too high the engine will have low vacuum and the high speed enriching circuit in the carb come into play lowering gas mileage.if the gearing is too low you'll have a heavy throttle opening, high rpms and poor fuel mileage.Some one once posted his AD truck runs 2.73 gears with a OD trans and a 235 engine.I remember he claimed his truck could do 120 + MPH with that same stock 235 and get over 20 mph at 70 mph.How could that be?
